#MHM50 week 17: clay pipes. We're not sure whether these were dug up at #StanleyRoyd Hospital or here at #Fieldhead but they remind us how land at both sites was used in the past. These pipes may have been discarded by staff & patients working these fields to feed the Hospital.
Its our 50th year #MHM50 so forgive us a little indulgence as we start with a new case all about us! Did you know our collection began at #StanleyRoyd Hospital as the Stephen G Beaumont Museum? We're forever indebted to 1st Curator Mr Ashworth for collecting the story of #WRPLA
#MHM50 week 16: #WestRidingAsylum fire brigade. Started in 1871 the WRA fire brigade was originally run by staff & patients (who would have a bed on the ground floor to quickly help in an emergency). The brigade fit the hospital’s ethos of self-sufficiency & work to aid recovery.
#MHM50 week 15: #StorthesHall Hospital badge. We're welcoming the newest addition to our collection, kindly supplied by one of our superstar supporters just yesterday! We just need a #Middlewood Hospital badge to complete our #WestRiding collection. Can you help?
#MHM50 week 14: communion plate, paten & chalice. Engraved 'W.R. Pauper Lunatic Asylum 1843', making them older than St Faith's church which opened in 1861 at #StanleyRoyd. Apparently this set was stolen from St Faith's in the 1960s & was later recovered from the River Calder!
#MHM50 week 13: various objects from St Faith's church. We're very lucky to have quite a few objects from St Faith's in our collection. The church opened on 6 Oct 1861 in the grounds of #StanleyRoyd Hospital & could seat a congregation of 600. Sadly St Faith's burned down in 2012
#MHM50 week 12: slide calculator c1900. Similar to a slide rule, this calculator made doing complicated division or multiplication quicker by comparing positions on the cylinder. The only person at #StanleyRoyd Hospital who knew how to use it was a patient in the Stores Office!

#MHM50 week 11: Sir Hiram Maxim's Pipe of Peace c1905. Maxim claimed the Pipe of Peace relieved his bronchitis. Vapours from water warmed with a few drops of 'Dirigo' were inhaled via the glass tube. Maxim was most famous for inventing the world's first machine gun in 1884.
#MHM50 week 10: Bobbin lace samplers mid C20th. Needlework was a popular pastime at #StanleyRoyd Hospital. These intricate samplers would have been painstakingly woven with a pattern marked in pins on a pillow. Bobbin lace is a process that takes lots of time, skill & patience.
#MHM50 week 8: salt & pepper cruet set. As we all know gravy is the best topping for a #pancake, so this this week our star object can add a little seasoning to your #pancakeday recipes. We believe these dinky little pots are from #StanleyRoydHospital and date around 1910[?]
#MHM50 week 7: Watchman's register. The 1st object listed in our catalogue, these devices were used to log when the night watchman (also female nurse) had checked the ward. We have several types of these registers, some were fitted to the hospital walls while others were portable
#MHM50 week 6: #FieldheadHospital opened in 1972 for children & adults with additional needs. Fieldhead School also opened in 1972 & was onsite until around 2002. These objects from Fieldhead School were added to our collection in 2022 as we marked 50 years of Fieldhead.
#MHM50 week 5: Stephen G Beaumont Museum reopening plaque & programme. After #StanleyRoydHospital closed in 1995 our collection moved to its current home at #FieldheadHospital in 2000. The collection was renamed and relaunched as the Mental Health Museum in 2013.
#MHM50 week 4: various Wakefield district hospital stamps. With the introduction of the NHS in 1948 the running of #StanleyRoyd Hospital fell to Wakefield B Group Hospital Management Committee. This may explain why we have objects for other local hospitals in our collection.
#MHM50 week 3: High Royds glass 1888-1988. There were eventually 4 West Riding hospitals; #WRPLA Wakefield (1818-1995), #Middlewood Sheffield (1872-1996), #HighRoyds Menston (1888-2003) & #StorthesHall Kirkburton (1904-1992). We have objects from all 4 Hospitals in our collection
