Bonus #poppy post: Who doesn’t love the adorable way the calyx falls off a California poppy flower? Eschscholzia californica. #Papaveraceae #Papaveroideae
Ehrendorferia chrysantha is 1 of 2 spp. in a genus that is endemic to the California Floristic Province. The genus was proposed in 1997 after the break-up of Dicentra: “Ehrendorferia is our birthday present to Professor Friedrich Ehrendorfer.” #Papaveraceae #poppy #CFP
Subfamily Fumarioideae was once recognized as a family but now is in #Papaveraceae. It has an odd, zygomorphic flower with a minimal calyx + nectar spur on 1 or 2 outer petals. Some species are climbers. This is Pseudo-fumaria alba (yes, there’s a hyphen). #poppy
Subfamily Hypecoöideae (#Papaveraceae) has just one genus, Hypecoum, of 16 spp. from Asia & the Mediterranean. It has monothecal anthers (some connate), staminal nectaries, & pollen presentation on the petals. 📷: H. pendulum by Jacinta Lluch Valero CCBYSA2 #poppy
The subfamily Pteridophylloideae (#Papaveraceae) is monotypic: There is just one species, Pteridophyllum racemosum (fern #poppy), from Honshu, Japan. The indeterminate inflorescence is just one of the unique features of this species. 📷: Yoshimasa Uchiyama CCBY4
If I had to pick one favorite #poppy, it might be this one: Romneya coulteri of the California Floristic Provence. Its big, blousy flowers are just fabulous… and I don’t use the F-word lightly. 😅 Petals crumpled in bud are characteristic of Papaveroideae. #Papaveraceae #CFP
Eschscholzia is a genus of 15 spp, of which E. californica (California #poppy) is best known, but check out the dainty, less strident flowers of Eschscholzia caespitosa of western North America. #Papaveraceae #Papaveroideae
Oreomecon nudicaulis (formerly, Papaver n., Iceland poppy) has naked scapes arising from basal rosettes of leaves. They are herbaceous perennials widely grown for their crepe-paper flowers. I love them. ❤️ #Papaveraceae #poppy #Papaveroideae
It’s poppy time! The #poppy family (#Papaveraceae) is one of my favorites! It’s worldwide except Australia. (What happened, Oz?) Flowers are usually showy, 2-merous, superior ovary of 2 fused carpels, placentation parietal. 4 subfamilies. 📷: Papaver cambricum, Papaveroideae
