Working on camera calibration for AI distance sampling #SnapshotUSA @sarameghanbeery @silmanmr
We combined game camera data from my dissertation research, @sarah_pesi's thesis research, and a publicly available dataset (#SnapshotUSA) to model occupancy and detection trends of white-tailed deer and coyotes in Central Appalachian forests.
If you want to be part of future (hopefully non-pandemic) large scale camera trap studies be sure to sign up for #SnapshotUSA and run cameras with us this fall. snapshot-usa.org

Great post by @cole_burton who led this epic Before-During Lockdown analysis of wildlife on camera traps from around the world to untangle how animals respond to the presence or absence of humans on the landscape. Includes data from many of #SnapshotUSA contributors @mike_cove

Such global #cameratrap synthesis is becoming feasible due to collaborations in regional networks, incl. @WildCAM_Network #SnapshotUSA #EuroMammals. And funding/support from many institutions and agencies, including @ubcforestry and @NSERC_CRSNG Canada Research Chairs..10/

@diego_amazonia @HerreraWildlife @RolandKays @bradleyallf @pchrysafis @sdlapoint @NaturalSciences @NCState_FER Here’s a purely anecdotal coyote not caring about white-flash #SnapshotUSA
This individual made regular appearances through March, then only one over the summer, and a few more in the fall including 3 spots in one day and during our sampling for #SnapshotUSA. These captures span 10 different camera locations (~2/3 of those permanently monitored)... 2/5
Is this coyote carrying a cat or an armadillo? From Gainsville FL area, #SnapshotUSA
Not the angle I was going for when I set up this #SnapshotUSA camera but at least this Tule Elk Bull crossing a wildlife crossing on the fence came out looking regal
A Carrizo Plains Tule Elk herd makes it's appearance on the 2023 #SnapshotUSA data set. Shortly after the camera was of course facing the sky.
This fall we participated in #SnapShotUSA using our #cameratraps to document #mammal species in #Newburgh and #BlackRockForest. It was a great opportunity to help @newburghschools students see what lives around the @CityOfNewburgh, including #coyote, #bobcat, and #greyfox!
A coyote visits a local spring for a drink of water during this year's #SnapshotUSA. This year I find myself favoring plains and grasslands over mountains. A sign of change? I think I just really wanted to see elk.
This has gotta be a possum - right? Didelphis, Virginia Opossum #SnapshotUSA
Flying squirrel zipping around and doing its seed-dispersal thing #SnapshotUSA @NaturalSciences
Anyone want to weigh in on this black squirrel from Minneapolis MN? Gray or Fox? Eastern gray in there for scale? Eastern Fox squirrels known from the area (but black?). #SnapshotUSA @Mammalogists
Deer having an awkward teenager moment in Grafton MA #SnapshotUSA
Second, the abundance of White-tailed deer in Missoula is staggering. With about 4.5 deer detections per day it is higher than 188 sites sampled by #SnapshotUSA and so is potentially the highest deer density in the country. Would be interesting to have a real density estimate
