“Goals are for people who care about winning once. Systems are for people who care about winning repeatedly.” — James Clear
THE GREAT PRICE DISCOVERY There was once a town famous for its perfectly functioning weighing scale. Every evening, merchants used it to decide the final weight of everything sold in the market. One day, a committee arrived. “We can make the final weight more accurate.” The merchants asked how. “Price discovery.” Nobody understood what that meant, which was reassuring because it sounded important. So the committee installed a new machine. A few days passed. Nobody quite understood what the machine was doing. Sometimes a sack that had weighed 100 kg all afternoon would suddenly show 96 kg, only to return to 100 a few minutes later. Sometimes two identical sacks would somehow finish the day with noticeably different weights. Sometimes the machine would swing wildly in the final minutes, while the merchants were still buying and selling based on whatever number flashed on the screen. People complained. A few merchants demanded that the old scale be brought back. The committee assured everyone there was nothing to worry about. “These are just temporary issues. The new system will improve price discovery.” Then one day, a sack that had weighed 100 kg all afternoon was placed on the machine near closing time. It showed 98 kg. Then 96. Then 94. The market closed. Everyone started shouting. Some merchants rushed to sell. Others cancelled orders. A few checked whether somebody had actually stolen grain from the sack. The committee remained calm. “Please don’t panic. The machine has discovered the true weight.” So 94 kg became the official weight of the sack. The next day, the same sack was placed on the same machine. 99.8 kg. The merchants stared at the display. One of them finally asked: “Yesterday you discovered it was 94 kg.” The committee nodded. “And today you’ve discovered it is 99.8 kg?” Another nod. The old merchant standing nearby asked: “So which one was the true weight?” The committee smiled: “Yes.”
This is who you're trading against.
This is not the exception. Most farmed fish are killed by suffocation while fully conscious. Depending on the species, it takes between 10 minutes and five hours for the fish to lose consciousness. Every day we kill over 250 million fish this way — including millions sold in the US and Europe. The closest human experience is suffocation, which is rated in palliative care literature as one of the most distressing experiences a human can endure. One day we'll wonder in horror at how we tolerated this for so long.
Just when you think we've run out of ways to be cruel to the animals we eat, someone invents this. 😡 Can you imagine the claustrophobia, confusion, & terror this poor #fish will endure? 😢
I was just in Mumbai, and I have to give them credit for the progress they’re making on infrastructure. The new Aqua Line metro is phenomenal. But the amount of work India still has to do on basic cleanliness and sanitation and it is hard to understand until you see it yourself. Would love for more westerners to go just to understand how wealthy they are, but that's a different point. Mumbai is completely surrounded by water, yet there are almost no places where people can actually enjoy the water. The beaches are filled with trash, the water is badly contaminated, and almost nobody swims, even when it’s brutally hot outside. Walking on the beach is just mud and trash meeting filthy water on the horizon. There are much poorer places around the world where people can still use the beaches. This is not just about money. India has gone decades without adequate trash collection, sewage treatment, or enforcement for a population of more than a billion people. At this point, the scale of the problem feels almost impossible, and the oceans around the world are paying the price for Indias garbage output as well. I like the direction Modi is taking the country, but India needs to treat cleanup like a national emergency. Stop with the small campaigns and organize a full scale blitz. Offer unemployed people paid work picking up trash, clearing drains and waterways, cleaning beaches, and maintaining public spaces. Give them proper equipment and supervision. Then build the collection and waste processing systems needed to stop everything from becoming filthy again a week later. India has shown that it can build metros, airports, highways, and digital infrastructure. Clean streets and usable water should be treated as infrastructure too. Mumbai should have one of the greatest waterfronts in the world. Instead, it's has basically an irrelevant feature of the city and feels surrendered to sewage and garbage.
THE LAST STRAW A merchant had a strong camel that had carried the same load reliably for years. Then he hired a new manager to run the caravan. The manager looked at the camel and asked an interesting question: “Can we put one more sack on it?” So he added a sack. The camel stood up. The manager smiled. The merchant was pleased. Clearly, there was still capacity. Together, they had discovered an important principle: if something is still standing, it clearly isn’t carrying enough. Next trip, the manager added another sack. The camel struggled a little, but still walked. It looked exhausted, which the manager interpreted as resistance to reform. “See?” he told the merchant. “People exaggerate these things.” The merchant nodded. After all, the goods were still arriving. Then came another bundle, another box, another sack. The camel had become less of an animal and more of a revenue opportunity. Every time it managed to keep moving, the manager treated its survival as proof that the previous burden had been harmless, while the merchant happily enjoyed the extra load being delivered. Eventually, the camel was carrying thrice what it once did, walking slower, stopping more often and looking increasingly miserable. But the merchant was delighted. “Look how much more productive the camel has become.” One day, after loading everything, the manager noticed a tiny piece of straw on the ground. “Surely this won’t matter.” He tossed it on top. The camel collapsed. The merchant and manager stared at the straw in disbelief. “Unbelievable. All those heavy sacks were fine, and this tiny straw ruined everything.”
“Let me get this straight, you’re lending billions with cheese as collateral?” “Not cheese. Parmesan. Parmigiano-Reggiano to be precise.“ “So, you finance this by packaging the Parmesan loans into Parmesan CDO A, which has part of Parmesan CDO B and both get put into Parmesan CDO C?” “Yeah. The original loans are backed by wheels of Parmesan. Minimum age of 12 months. Some are 24 months. 36 months. 48 month. Hell, up to 120 months. Delicious. Millions of wheels. But Parmesan CDO C is a synthetic Parmesan CDO. A CDO of Parmesan CDOs. Parmesan Squared if you will.” “What if it gets too hot in the summer and the wheels of Parmesan melt?” “We’ll sell Parmesan credit default swaps.” “C’mon! How much bigger is the market for Parmesan-backed sythentic loan and CDS products than actual edible real-life Parmesan that I can grate on top of my homemade spaghetti bolognese tonight?” “At least 10,000x.” “Ok, let’s say we have an underlying pool of $10 million in Parmesan wheels. How much money could be out there betting on your synthetic Parmesan financial products?” “Probably $100 billion.” “That is fucking crazy.” “No, it’s awesome.”
The biggest cheese banks in Italy store 300,000+ wheels of Parmesan. Dairy farmers use cheese as collateral and get loans up to 80% of market value. At ~$1,000 per wheel, that’s $200m+ in loans (banks seize and sell cheese if farmer can’t pay back). Best part: banks use
The guy who invented dial telephones put 250,000 phone switchboard operators out of work. This was the highest paying position for women in the US. The guy who invented it was NOT an engineer or electrician, but rather, a mortician. There were two funeral homes in the town he served… his and a rival. The owner of the rival had a wife who worked as a switchboard operator. Anytime anyone called for A funeral home or HIS funeral home, she would route the call to her husband. He invented the dial phone so customers could explicitly end around switchboard operators and call someone directly. I just love this story.
@allengilmer Wouldn’t this just lead to less cashier jobs? What’s more important, jobs or affordability. Seems you can’t have both

India is more corrupt than poor. From constable to minister, corruption is not an exception here. It is the system. Between those two ends, sit a hundred layers of middlemen, clerks, officers, fixers and brokers, each taking their share, each shaving something off your dignity before they let you pass. Bribe, commission hafta, donation, fund. Different names for the same theft. It is so common that it no longer shocks anyone. Like dust in the air, you breathe it in without noticing. Like the common cold, everyone has it, and nobody thinks it can be cured. Poverty is not the disease. Poverty is the scar. This country never lacked wealth. It lacked conscience. We had land, labour, talent, opportunity. Corruption simply diverted the flow, siphoned it away, made sure what belonged to millions ended up with a few. What should have built schools built farmhouses. What should have built hospitals built lockers full of cash. What should have built futures built empires. And we called it normal. Corruption did not sneak in. It was welcomed, fed, protected and then dressed up as procedure. Give a man a chair and he starts selling access to the table. Give him a stamp and he starts charging for the ink. Give him authority and he starts extorting as if it is his birthright. The taker feels no shame. The giver feels no outrage. Because there is no option. You pay or you wait. You pay or you suffer. You pay or you disappear inside the system. Complain and you meet another thief. Report and you report to his senior. The chain is perfectly designed to protect itself. Those viral seizures of notes, gold bars, luxury cars, sprawling properties, stuffed bank lockers are not the scandal. They are souvenirs. The real corruption is quieter and far more brutal. It lives in everyday transactions. In files that refuse to move. In signatures that cost money. In rules that bend only for those who can pay. It is not spectacular. It is routine. And that is what makes it terrifying. We keep blaming politicians as if corruption sits only in parliament. It does not. It sits in offices, stations, counters, contracts, classrooms, hospitals and sometimes in us. We like to believe we are victims looking at the iceberg. We are not looking at it. We are standing on it. We are the iceberg.
One day someone will tell your kids “you’re just like your father” it’s up to you to make sure that’s not an insult.
