Ball boys harassing a goalkeeper, trying to steal his towel in the rain, forcing a player to literally guard it on the touchline. This is not football. This is chaos…. A security issue. It’s been almost a week and I still can’t wrap my head around this incident. Ball boys trying to steal a towel and assaulting an opposing player, and the referee doesn’t even bother stopping the match or intervening in any way. Shocking.

Getting a bullshit penalty, fucking it with a penenka & having ball boys assault the players over a towel and STILL playing victim is incredible behavior

A Reflection on the Beauty of Motherhood: Kintsugi is the Japanese art of repairing broken pottery. Instead of discarding what’s broken, it is sealed and bound with gold. Brokenness becomes a work of art. Rather than hiding scars, it transforms them. That’s motherhood. That’s her impact on her family. As a man, I don’t pretend to understand the mystery that is motherhood. It is other. It exists in a beautiful space that lies outside of me and my comprehension. But for 22 years I’ve watched its expression in my home. I’ve seen four children carried, nursed, nurtured, nourished, delighted in, and cared for. I’ve seen the practical parts of motherhood lived out - The selflessness without expectation, the quiet sacrifice without the demand for recognition or repayment. I’ve seen the ability to gracefully walk the fine lines that separate caring from coddling and challenging from condemning. I’ve also seen the mystical parts of motherhood - The way a mother feels her children in her body, even when they’re young adults. Somehow their pain is very literally her pain as well. I’ve seen how helpless she feels when she can’t be there for them. I’ve felt the tossing and turning in our bed as rest can’t arrive until she knows her children are safe. And I have been healed by all of it. We all dream of a life that only brings a few chips and scratches. But more often than not, our lives are full of shattering. My grandmother’s life was shattered by the loss of her father when she was young. In her grief, my great grandmother disappeared from view, sending grandma and her brothers to be raised by family. My grandmother knew a childhood of pain. So my mom grew up in a home that was not safe. Her mother was her adversary. Life was hard and, according to her mother, my mom was too soft to endure it. My mother’s childhood was shattered by all sorts of abuses. Having never experienced the fullness of motherhood, my mom gave what she could. She did her best to offer her children what was withheld from her. My childhood was good by many accounts, but I was broken by the persistent belief that I was a problem to be solved rather than a person to be loved. Having grown up experiencing the muted expression of motherhood, I somehow managed to marry a woman who embodies its fullness. Here’s what I’ve seen: A mother is full of delight. Her kids experience her authentic joy every time they walk through the door. A mother is brilliant and diligent. Her kids have their curiosity cultivated and their minds engaged when they’re in her presence. A mother is present and attentive. She is awed by the small beauties most would pass by without notice. Above all, a mother is a healer. She is the very connective tissue of life together as a family. She is the gold that binds up our broken places. She is the one who ensures that we collectively are one. She brings peace where there’s division and meaning to the daily and mundane. On an individual level, she is the comforting touch, the listening ear, the shared tears for each of us. She is the deep laughter, the surprise treat, the favorite meal, and the unexpected gift. In the midst of life’s struggles and the brokenness each of us face each day, she bonds us together. Our brokenness is bandaged up and made an irreplaceable part of the fabric of who we are. In many ways, my wife has been both the mother of my children and a mother to me. She has given me the delight that was withheld, the warmth that was often unavailable, and the ever-present smile letting me know I would always be okay. I have been delicately pieced back together and sealed with gold. Her simple, daily gestures of grace have opened pathways into deeper healing. Much of what was lost in my childhood has been restored in her arms. I can think of no other symbol that communicates who a mother is to her family than the beauty of kintsugi. A mother’s heart brings all of the pieces together and from it creates beauty. Year after year, she takes what’s broken and binds it with gold.
