For optimal sleep quality, it's crucial to manage your bedroom environment, particularly the temperature. According to @sleepdiplomat in the latest Huberman Lab Guest Series on sleep, achieving the ideal sleep state requires lowering both core and brain temperatures by approximately 2-3°F. He suggests maintaining a bedroom temperature around 67°F. While individual preferences may vary, a cooler room is generally recommended for a restful night.
@hubermanlab @sleepdiplomat I must be an anomaly. I can’t sleep in a cold room. I repeatedly wake up if it’s cold.
@hubermanlab @sleepdiplomat What does this say about where Homo sapiens have thrived over the last 5-100k years? (Begs the question-how many generations does it take for body and outside temp to optimize together?)
@hubermanlab - I agree that core body temperature needs to decrease in order to initiate deep sleep, but this stage of sleep is very pro-inflammatory. Molecules associated with this inflammation increase brain temperature. It could be that brain temp decreases to initiate sleep on-set, but that the deepness of that sleep is associated with increased brain temp?
The Japanese have known about this for 20 years .. the Shinkansen train lowers its temperature as soon as it departs the station by around 2-3 degrees and soon after everyone is blissfully sleeping so there is calm and quiet in the train .. As usual in Japan everything is done to maintain orderly efficiency and no disturbance.
@hubermanlab @sleepdiplomat Temperature is fine, it’s the two 50 pound pit bulls that alter my sleep.
@hubermanlab @sleepdiplomat For me, regardless of temp (67-74 degrees per Nest), optimal sleep happens like clockwork if I eat a bowl of rice or rice crispies before bed. In a RCT using rice bran extract (active ingredient) in Korea, they found it was associated with better sleep. ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/P…
@hubermanlab @sleepdiplomat Dropping a fahrenheit based tweet during this tumultuous time is a bold move... I hope you know what you're getting yourself into mate. @pmarca this has to stop. x.com/pmarca/status/…

@hubermanlab @sleepdiplomat Just buy an @eightsleep—perfect sleep temperature all the time.
@hubermanlab @sleepdiplomat It has helped. I get a solid 4-5 hours and use a weighted blanket, one leg under one leg out. Trying to get at least 6-7 hours. Thanks.
