I just learned through a friend of his wife, that David Rayner (author of many maths textbooks including the classic Blue Rayner) passed away recently 😢. I worked with him for a couple of years and he was so funny, so clever and he helped many of us with his excellent books.

Quick Q: is it still the case that in GCSE exams Ss will be penalised for expressing probabilities as percentages? Are fractions and decimals the only acceptable formats? Thanks!

The results of the poll are in: of the 597 people who voted 55.3% of you said a sphere has 1 face. I would be very interested to understand your reasoning 😀. Notably, 44.7% did NOT say that a sphere has 1 face. What are we saying to our students to explain this?

Do we actually know the probability, p, of an adult catching the virus that causes covid-19? It kind of matters as children are '56% less likely' than this probability, of catching it. If p=0.9, fine it makes a difference but if p=0.01 then it doesn't really.
