What does take this “seriously” mean? Is Biden not doing outreach to Black voters or fighting racist gerrymanders? Does “seriously” just mean believe pre-election polls. Pre-election polls didn’t have Biden winning 92% of the Black vote in 2020, not even close. But he did. 1/

Pre-election polls did not have Hillary willing 92% of the Black vote, not even close. But she did. This isn’t an argument that the polls can’t be right this time. It’s just that the “take this seriously” stuff doesn’t come with any practical plan. 2/
Not only that, it comes with no real explanation as to why 2024 would be the year for a massive racial voting realignment. I’ve seen no good explanation yet. 3/
Black voters have long been the most conservative Democratic voters. That’s not news. And, yes, Black voters initially were against gay marriage, for instance, in large numbers. But that changed and they kept voting Democratic. Why would that change this year? 4/
Black voters also maybe the most practical voting bloc in the country. They didn’t fall in love with Biden in 2020. They voted for him because they knew Trump was the alternative. Maybe there’s a solid reason that would change this year. But I’ve seen no one offer one yet. 5/
But my main point is a simple one. If Dems weren’t taking this possibility seriously, what would or should they be doing differently? If you can’t answer that, what’s the point of any of this?
This also makes it impossible for us to focus on a larger issue. Why does a majority of white voters up and down the economic scale continue voting for a man like Trump? What is their responsibility to move away from him? Why must 90-plus percent of Black voters be responsible?
