🧵1/ WHO GRADES THE GENERALS Yesterday morning the Pentagon announced a new test that will help decide who becomes a general in the United States military. The man who designed it pleaded guilty to 6 offences — including conduct unbecoming an officer — and was discharged from the Marine Corps. His office is run by a man whose 2020 nomination was withdrawn without a vote, after he called a former president a "terrorist leader" and Islam "the most oppressive violent religion I know of." He was given a Pentagon job anyway. 5 years later he was confirmed to run this one. Inside that same office, holding undisclosed government appointments and active official email accounts, sat 3 commentators who were writing about defence policy for the public at the same time. One of them had spent 2 years demanding exactly this. February: "Louisiana maneuvers style war games… a Marshall style plucking board to cull the go/fo crowd of Marxists and failed leaders." June, to the Secretary of War's own account: "I hope he establishes plucking boards soon to cull these people current generals and admirals too." Yesterday the war game arrived.
