Oh! I almost forgot. The chart of nuclides? The MAP of all isotopes in existence? The periodic table, only with all versions of an element rather than just the number of protons? The first was co-designed by Margaret Melhase. She's been with you the whole time.

So ALL OF US had our lives changed by something discovered by someone kicked out of science because of her gender. Margaret Fuchs (married name) died in 2006. Who knows what she would have accomplished if she hadn't been refused a place in grad school./

Why? Because Cs-137 is HUGELY important. We use it in nuclear medicine to calibrate machines. We use it to sterilize equipment and foods, it's used in flow meters and thickness gauges. It is one of the most important radioisotopes for its applications. All from an undergraduate.

So Margaret Melhase graduates. She is REJECTED from grad school because no, no, women aren't allowed to do chemistry. She worked briefly on the Manhattan Project, but without the qualifications, she gave up science, became a housewife and mom of 3. Science lost her.

This was INSANE for an *undergrad* to discover. There are only a few thousand isotopes known to science! But she couldn't tell anyone: it was WW2, and even though the US was neutral, nuclear stuff was top top secret. Her discovery was hushed up and forgotten.

So Melhase does her experiments - she's a great chemist - and she finds caesium with activity intense enough you could measure it with an electroscope. Melhase watched her sample for 2 weeks, and soon realised what she had: a new isotope! Caesium-137, with a half-life of 30 yrs

So today we're going to do a chemist who has been unjustly forgotten by history. Her name is Margaret Melhase. Her discovery is one of the most chemically defining fingerprints humans have left on the world. And it might well have saved your life.
