La primera foto de Messi en Barcelona fue en la habitación 546 del Hotel Plaza. Se la tomó Jorge, su padre. El 13 de septiembre de 2000, hace 26 años. Eran ellos dos. Leo era menudito, inofensivo. Acababan de llegar de su primer entreno. Era tan temeroso a socializar con los demás chicos que prefirió cambiarse en otro camerino, solo, escogiendo la privacidad. Juan Mateos, del Barcelona, le decía a Jorge: “Es muy chiquito”. “Mirálo una vez, solo una”, le suplicó. Cuando la pulguita empezó los malabares, Mateos se paró de la grada y entró a la cancha. Lo quería ver más de cerca. Padre e hijo regresaron a su cuarto, y Leo calmaba la ansiedad dándole toques a la pared con una pelota. No se quedaba quieto. Para terminar de convencer a las directivas, Fabián Soldini, uno de sus representantes en esa época, tuvo la idea de comprar un kilo de naranjas y pelotas de tenis para venderlo como el “nuevo Maradona”. Le entregó los costales, le dio una semana para practicar y sacó un video. Con la naranja hizo 113 toques (de ventiuna) y con la de tenis, 140. Ese mismo día le dieron una de ping pong y logró 29 golpes. Creían que había sido una gran prueba y que habían sorprendido, pero nunca tuvieron el ok del Barcelona. Jorge había dejado su trabajo en una fábrica de acero. Su esposa y otros tres hijos no aguantaron, se regresaron a Argentina. Jorge y Leo, con mirada cómplice, dijeron: “Aguantemo un poquito más, dale, ya estamo aquí”. Pasaron más de dos meses y nada, silencio, ni una noticia. Pensaban llevarlo al Milán si no era el Barcelona, hasta que recibieron una llamada del representante Horacio Gaggioli. Había logrado una firma de Carles Rexach, el secretario técnico del club, en una servilleta en el Club de Tennis Pompeia; ese garabato en la fina tela finiquitó la contratación de la pulga. Pero Leo igual no estaba muy feliz con la noticia. Cuentan que de Rosario a Buenos Aires Messi lloró sin parar. Sabía que no iba a volver más, que las cosas no iban a ser igual, que su vida iba a cambiar. No hay Leo Messi sin ese padre que lo dejó todo por ese niño menudo y pequeño de 13 años que posa con miedo en esa ventana. A sus 68 años falleció el arquitecto de todo.
