There was a time when simply warning against these people and ideologies would get you called a spy, a snake, a government agent or a sell-out. Salafis were mocked, ridiculed and laughed at for warning against the Khawārij, revolutionary movements, the Muslim Brotherhood and the methodology that would later be represented by people such as Usāmah bin Lādin. Then things got serious. 9/11 happened. Suddenly, everyone started jumping on the bandwagon and warning against the very extremism Salafi scholars had been warning about for years. People need to understand: this is nothing new. These warnings did not suddenly appear after 9/11. For decades, the scholars were warning against takfīr, political agitation, rebellion, revolutionary ideology and the spilling of innocent blood. Shaykh al-Albānī was openly criticising the methodology of the Muslim Brotherhood long before 9/11, particularly during his years in Jordan from the 1980s onwards. Usāmah bin Lādin issued his “Declaration of War” in 1996, followed by the infamous declaration of 22 February 1998 calling for attacks against Americans. Yet Salafi scholars were warning against him before 9/11. On 19 December 1998, Shaykh Muqbil ibn Hādī al-Wādiʿī said concerning bin Lādin: “I completely reject and declare myself free of Bin Laden, for he is an evil threat and tribulation to the nation, and his actions are heinous.” He also explained that he had already advised and warned bin Lādin and rejected attempts by those associated with him to involve his daʿwah in the purchasing of weapons. So when Salafis warn against the ideology of the Khawārij today, this is not some post-9/11 invention. It was not manufactured to please governments, intelligence agencies or the Western media. The warning begins with the Sunnah itself. The Prophet ﷺ said: “The Khawārij are the dogs of Hellfire.” - Sunan Ibn Mājah, 173 The Prophet ﷺ warned about them over fourteen centuries before al-Qāʿidah, ISIS or any modern political movement existed. And there is another point worth mentioning. People suffering from serious psychological problems deserve help and compassion. But someone who is clearly unstable, irrational or incapable of responsible judgement should not be pushed in front of cameras and presented as though they represent the religion of nearly two billion Muslims. Islam has scholars. It has students of knowledge. It has principles, scholarship and an established tradition. A disturbed individual shouting extreme opinions into a camera does not suddenly become a spokesman for Islam because his clips generate views. And there is a lesson in all of this: When Salafi scholars warn you about certain individuals or methodologies, do not wait until people are being killed, buildings are being blown up or the consequences are staring everyone in the face before you finally take those warnings seriously. These scholars understand the roots of these ideologies. They know where certain principles lead, often long before the average person sees the end result. And do not only become concerned when the issue is the Khawārij. Have ghayrah for your religion. Apply the same critical principles when the scholars warn against Ṣūfiyyah, ḥizbiyyah, innovation, political partisanship or anyone else opposing the Qurʾān, Sunnah and the way of the Salaf. Do not wait for something to become fashionable or for the wider world to recognise the danger before you take the scholars seriously. The Khawārij are not new. The warnings are not new. The only thing that changes is when people finally decide to listen.
