If ransomware hit your medical office tonight, could you open tomorrow?
“We have backups” is only half the answer.
Ask your IT provider:
• When did we last test a restore?
• How long would recovery take?
• Could an attacker delete our backups too?
Don’t wait for an outage to find out.
Still have Windows 10 computers in your medical office? You may not need to replace all of them.
Have your IT provider check the exact edition, version, and license on each machine.
• Can run Windows 11? Plan the upgrade and confirm licensing and compatibility with your medical software.
• Need more time on Windows 10 22H2? Ask about a commercial Windows 10 Extended Security Updates (ESU) license. It provides security updates through paid annual coverage for up to three years.
• Running Enterprise or IoT? The specific version matters. Enterprise LTSC 2021 remains supported into January 2027, Enterprise/IoT Enterprise LTSC 2019 into January 2029, and IoT Enterprise LTSC 2021 into January 2032. Regular Enterprise or IoT editions don’t automatically get that longer support.
Before buying new computers, get an inventory. Before keeping old ones, confirm they’re actually receiving security updates.
Who still has access to your medical office’s email?
The receptionist who left last month? A former billing company? An IT vendor you replaced?
Ask your IT provider for a list of active accounts and who can access shared inboxes.
Changing one password may not remove everyone’s access.
How many computers in your medical office still run Windows 10?
One at reception? A few in exam rooms? All of them?
Standard support ended October 14, 2025. Without extended updates or a supported edition, newly discovered security flaws may go unpatched.
Those computers could be accessing patient records every day.
Ask your IT provider: “Are these machines still receiving Windows security updates?”
If the answer is “I think so,” you need a better answer.
Run a small medical office? Don’t rush to connect AI to your email without talking to your IT provider first.
It sounds convenient. Summarize emails, draft replies, save your staff some time.
But your inbox may also contain patient names, referrals, lab results, and insurance details. Do you know which of those emails the tool can read?
Before clicking “Allow,” have your IT provider check its permissions, how it handles your data, and whether a HIPAA business associate agreement covers that specific feature.
A few minutes of checking now could save you a much bigger problem later.
You removed a patient’s name before pasting their story into an AI chatbot.
But you left their age, town, treatment date, and a rare diagnosis.
Would you still call that anonymous?
Healthcare AI needs more than a “remove names” habit.
