Jadwiga Kuryluk, began her acting career shortly before the outbreak of WW2. During the German occupation she joined the resistance, fought in the #WarsawUprising, then escaped Poland to join the Gen. Anders’ Army. After the war she returned to acting and died #OTD in 1995.

The Litzmannstadt (before WW2 Łódź) Ghetto was the second largest Jewish ghetto established by Germans in occupied Poland. #OTD in 1940, the ghetto was finally isolated from the rest of the city. Approximately 140,000 people were cramped in a small area and prohibited to leave.

Karol Estreicher was a Polish historian, who successfully retrieved art pieces stolen from Poland by Nazi Germany during WW2. He managed to find and return the Da Vinci’s “Lady with an Ermine” and the Wit Stwosz altarpiece. He passed away on 29 April 1984.

Tadeusz Borowski, a Polish writer, was sent to the German KL Auschwitz on 29th April 1943. His collection "This Way for the Gas, Ladies and Gentlemen" captures the horrific experiences of the prisoners. After the war, Tadeusz took his own life in 1951.

1/4 The 24th Annual Katyń Remembrance, organized by the National Katyń Memorial Foundation, was held yesterday in Baltimore. We commemorated 22,000 Polish Army officers, civilian and political leaders, and intellectuals killed in the Katyń Massacre by the NKVD in April 1940.

In 2019 the IPN commemorated 45 Polish women, the victims of the KL Ravensbrück sub-camp Neubrandenburg. Their remains were found, when the IPN’s Office of Search and Identification discovered urns with ashes of Polish women murdered in KL Ravensbrück. @PoszukiwaniaIPN

30 April 1945, the Red Army liberated KL Ravensbrück, "capital of the crime against women," as Sarah Helm put it. Over 100,000 women had gone through that German camp, and 30,000 to 92,000 never left it. They came from 30 countries but the largest group were 40,000 Poles.

From October 1939, Maj. Henryk Dobrzański's 300 cavalry, infantry and heavy-machine guns went on a string of victorious clashes against the German troops in the Kielce region, German-occupied Poland, using hit-and-run tactics. The first WW2 partisan was KIA #OTD in 1940.

Wiesław Chrzanowski joined the resistance during WW2 and fought in the #WarsawUprising. After the war, he was imprisoned by the communists and later, joined the anti-communist opposition. In free Poland, he served as Parliament Speaker. Charzanowski passed away #OTD in 2012.

Waldemar Baszanowski was one of the greatest lightweight Olympic weightlifters in history. He won two Olympic gold medals (1964 and 1968), along with several World and European Championships. Waldemar set 24 world and 61 national records #OTD in 2011, he passed away.

Marian Pisarek, was a Polish fighter ace, who fought in the Battle of France and Battle of Britain during WW2. Having shot down at least 12 German aircraft, Maj. Pisarek was one of the most successful Polish pilots in WW2. #OTD in 1942, he was killed in action.

Albert Forster served as the Gauleiter of the Danzig-West Prussia during WW2. He orchestrated the establishment of the KL Stutthof and the massacres in Piaśnica, which claimed over 12,000 lives. #OTD in 1948, he was sentenced to death in Poland and four years later, executed.

Michał Kozal became a priest in 1918. Later he was a lecturer in a seminary and served as an auxiliary Bishop. During WW2, he was arrested by the Gestapo and put in the KL Dachau in 1941. He died of a deadly injection of phenol, two years later there. In 1987 he was beatified.

Edward Szabelski became a Catholic priest in 1926. 8 years later he was appointed a chaplain in the Polish Army. During WW2, he was captured by the Germans, put into KL Buchenwald and then to KL Dachau Priesterblock, where he died of exhaustion in 1942.

Stanisław Mysakowski would become a Catholic priest in 1920 and actively serve his community through charitable efforts. During WW2, he got imprisoned by the Germans, first in KL Sachsenhausen, and then in KL Dachau, where he lost his life in a gas chamber in 1942.

29 April is the Day of Martyrdom of Polish Clergy During WW2. 20% of them perished in the years 1939-1945, murdered by the Germans, Soviets, or Ukrainian nationalists, but some Polish dioceses lost up to a half of their clerics, friars and nuns.

Helena Piszczatowska, born #OTD in 1898, worked for the tax office before WW2, and under German occupation of Poland served as a resistance courier. She was so good that in the #WarsawUprising she held the rank of lieutenant in the Home Army Command, dealing with comms.

Oskar #Schindler, born #OTD in 1908, would become a WW2 Righteous Among the Nations for saving his Jewish workforce from German-perpetrated Holocaust. Following the 1993 movie by #StevenSpielberg, he became the best-known Righteous Among the Nations.
