#OnThisDay 1919 The British Indian Army fired on unarmed civilians killing 379 & wounded 1200 in the Amritsar Massacre. Ordered by the Governor of the Punjab, Sir Michael O'Dwyer, from Tipperary. O'Dwyer was later assassinated by an Indian man, Udham Singh. #Ireland #History

@irelandbattles O'Dwyer was an uncle tom papist unionist; his family had been long ostracized by Native. They had been long subject to nationalist attack & their house shot-up, cattle houghed, fodder burnt. His father was terrorized to early death by natives. He believed in hard line for natives
