The person who smiles with you, could be the one angry with your growth. His ‘friendliness’ disarms you from getting suspicious and enforcing your boundaries. Once he encroaches into your boundaries, he fights your growth from within. Never be permissible. Be selective.

Everyone has basic minimums. Mine is that I cannot date a woman who abuses alcohol/whiskey. You either quit, or never did. It has helped me a lot over the years. I like my woman sober.
