I agree that crypto and more specifically, blockchain technology has real value: faster, cheaper, 24/7 payments etc. What I still struggle to understand is why BTC, ETH, and similar assets should be valued as highly as they are today? The only valuation anchor that makes intuitive sense to me is the average cost to produce a coin — hardware, electricity, and time. Beyond that, a large portion of the price seems driven by expectations and speculation rather than fundamentals. I do believe some blockchain based assets are here to stay. Still, I worry that we could wake up one morning to find that most cryptocurrencies have lost a significant share of their value. I hope I’m wrong, because that would be deeply painful for many people and it would resemble a modern version of “tulip mania.” That said, I could be completely mistaken and we may yet see BTC reach $1M. It will be interesting to see how it plays out.
