Pregabalin vs Gabapentin: New Heart Risk Study A new study (JAMA Network Open, Sept 2025) found that: 1. In people 65–89 years old, pregabalin users had ~50% higher risk of developing heart failure compared to gabapentin users. 2. The risk was much higher in those with prior heart or vascular disease. 3. Even without known heart disease, older adults on pregabalin still had some added risk. What does this mean? ✅For patients: If you are older or have heart problems, ask your doctor if gabapentin or other options may be safer. Report swelling, breathlessness, or sudden weight gain early. ✅For doctors: Prescribe pregabalin cautiously in elderly, especially with cardiovascular disease. Monitor closely if it must be used. Bottom line: Pregabalin may not be the best first choice in older adults with heart risk; gabapentin looks safer. (Note: This study only showed an association, and further studies are needed to establish cause-effect relationships. Follow your doctor’s advice regarding the use of pregabalin or gabapentin)
