@lxeagle17 @TheArgumentMag The blue wave in 2018 was "just due to Trump"; isn't this Trump *plus* Congress's (and a little bit of SCOTUS') abandonment of any type of checks/balances? The whole party's refusal to do anything of substance to stand up against Trump?

@PhilliesJake they have a multi-week mediocre period, followed by a shorter disastrous one, and then a good chunk of best-in-baseball results. if this sequencing continues, they'll switch over to disastrous mode soon and miss the playoffs by ending the season with a ~1-9 streak.

@KnowingBetterYT As a parallel, think about the referendum system (in the states where such a thing exists). "The people" of a state can directly instruct their legislatures what to do. We can think of senatorial elections since 1913 being along roughly the same lines.

@KnowingBetterYT I don't think that's strictly true since the electoral base for Reps are just districts, while for Senators its the entire state. Ultimately, everything boils down to "the people", but its important to note *which* people.

This is the main problem with the post-truth online information ecosystem in a nutshell. A MAGA user claimed last night that Democratic politicians "Blinken, Rice Nuland and Vindman" had a conference call with Zelensky on his flight to Washington and advised him to "stand strong" and be "tough" against Trump, which directly led to the argument with Trump and Vance in the Oval Office. She cites no source or evidence for her claim and goes on to admit she was merely "speculating". Three hours later, another MAGA users rehashes that claim, saying "rumour has it" that those four Democrats did this and therefore violated the Logan Act. Again, no evidence is provided for this claim at all, but the tweet goes viral. This morning, major MAGA user amuse with 560,000 followers tweets the same claim as a news story, this time saying Obama was also directly involved and Zelensky was told to reject the minerals deal. Once again, zero source or evidence is provided by amuse, but the tweet racks up 1.7 million views. Finally this morning, Trump's envoy Richard Grenell shares the same claim, saying it's "very serious", meaning this claim has now reached the president's senior aides. At no point throughout this entire cycle has any of these users bothered to simply ask: "Is there any source or evidence for this?" And now, millions of people likely believe this is true. That Zelensky, on the advice of senior Democrats, scuppered the minerals deal and got into an argument with Trumo and Vance. There's still no source or avidence that this actually happened. But evidence no longer seems to matter in the post-truth online information ecosystem.

I shake my head as people actually think DOGE has identified waste, fraud and abuse in 5 days. What they are doing is gutting programs they don't like according to Project 2025. They haven't done any analysis and don't even know the functions of the departments they are cutting.

@LivingUnited Because of separation of powers, the President simply doesn't have the authority to do what he is doing. And he/they are doing with with barely even the slightest fig leaf of oversight, as he fired most (if not all) the inspectors general.

@YetiMoose @vanillaopinions I think it's more a concern that Dems won't control the Senate for the foreseeable future, so even the next Dem Prez might just get any SCOTUS nominees blocked. Replace her with a younger Justice while they can, and the chances go down that there will be another Scalia situation
