Vietnam’s Last Empress Was Celebrated for Her Beauty.
Even After the Monarchy Fell, She Appealed to the World for Her Country’s Freedom.
Nam Phương became empress at 20.
Eleven years later, the monarchy was gone.
Born into a wealthy Catholic family and educated in France, she married Emperor Bảo Đại in 1934. Religious controversy surrounded the marriage, but she kept her faith.
As empress, she visited schools, hospitals and orphanages, using her own money to help people in need.
Then came August 1945.
Bảo Đại abdicated. The Nguyễn dynasty ended.
When French forces returned to reassert colonial rule, Nam Phương appealed to friends abroad. She condemned the bloodshed and asked those who had suffered through war to help end the fighting in her country.
Her appeal urged Vietnam’s friends to “defend freedom.”
She signed it Madame Vĩnh Thụy, using her husband’s personal name.
She later settled in France with their five children. From there, she continued writing to Bảo Đại about events at home.
In 1949, a newspaper photograph of a woman kneeling with a child before her husband moved her to ask whether he could adopt the child. She worried about what would become of children who had lost their fathers.
In 1953, she criticized money spent on his tennis lessons. It could serve more useful purposes, she argued. She wanted to help Vietnamese students struggling with accommodation costs.
She died in September 1963, aged 49, and was buried in a village cemetery at Chabrignac, France.
Her portrait still draws attention.
How much of her life do we miss when we remember only her beauty?
In a first, all-women Assam Rifles contingent, led by Major Khushboo Kanwar was my inspiration for the day. She is a role model for all my 150,000 girls @NanhiKali and in fact the all girls of India. Pl see the clip & RT. @SheetalMehta@1DebaratiSen@priyaramani@snigdhapoonam
15 miners have been struggling for air in a flooded coal mine for two weeks.
Meanwhile, PM struts about on Bogibeel Bridge posing for cameras.
His government refuses to organise high pressure pumps for the rescue.
PM please save the miners.
Everytime you think this Govt can't stoop low any further, it surprises you.
Is Modi Govt a private company to send a bill to Kerala Govt for helping in relief ops? Is it not the duty of Central Govt to help state Govts?
Shame on the BJP Govt !!
