Arsenal won 15 out of 17 aerial duels in their own half vs Sunderland, including every single one inside their own penalty area.

0.52 - Arsenal faced the fewest shots (11), the fewest shots on target (1) and allowed their opponents the lowest xG (0.52) across the first two matchdays of the Premier League season. 🔒 Locked.

16 - Tonight was the 16th time in the last five seasons that Arsenal haven't allowed a shot on target in a Premier League game, twice as many as any other side in that time (Liverpool, 8). Solid.

50 - Tonight was David Raya's 50th Premier League clean sheet for Arsenal in 109 appearances. Since joining Arsenal in 2023-24, Raya has kept more clean sheets than any other goalkeeper across Europe's big-five leagues. Safe.

It's time to put an end to Martin Ødegaard in the #10 for this current iteration of Arsenal. Here's why. 👇 Arsenal are a better team with Merino, Havertz, and Eze in the #10 over Ødegaard. Let's take Merino as one example and compare him to Ødegaard: More presence between the lines. More bodies in the box. Bigger goal threat. Same pressing intelligence + organisational skills. Equally as mobile. Better in duels. Aerial outlet. Can drop and make passes to offer control just like Ødegaard does. He's captain material, too. A leader. It's not a comparison really, is it? The reality of today's game is that Arsenal were really quite poor for much of it at an even game-state. Nowhere near enough runs beyond against Villa's high line. Nowhere near enough bodies in the box against the low block. Nowhere near enough 'speed up' when bringing the ball out of defence. Nowhere near enough transitional threat. The problem? In every area? The #10 being a #8 but playing as a #10. It's not Ødegaard's fault that Arteta continues to misprofile him. I firmly believe that Ødegaard is an elite #8. Ala Bernardo Silva. And I don't use the word 'elite' or make the comparison to an all-time great in Bernardo lightly. That's how good Ødegaard is, but he is NOT a #10 in this Arsenal team! Arteta is the best tactician in the world and he had Emery's number tonight but he needs to stop playing Ødegaard out of position. Each of the midfield 3 consistently coming to the ball can only work if the front 3 is elite (like PSG), but that's not the case with Arsenal (especially without a Hakimi at right back on top of that). Havertz + Ødegaard is a bad dynamic because when Havertz is the #9 he often comes loose. When that happens you want your #10 to penetrate that space, but Ødegaard never does that. It's not his game. There are no double movements or relationship between the pair outside of overly ambitious technical combinations in tight spaces against a packed block (which is the worst way to and break a team down). Arsenal needed Havertz in the #10 and Gyökeres in the #9 or Havertz as the #9 and Merino in the #10 today. It would have given the team more runs beyond in every moment, a bigger transitional threat with more bodies high + the #10 not being on the toes of the other midfielders, and more players between the lines to speed up the play from back to front more often. The threat improved as soon as Ødegaard went off (although the game-state had changed, of course). The blueprint for success without a game-changing attacking signing centres around Eze playing off the left and two out of Havertz, Merino, and Gyökeres playing as the front 2. Eze can also play there when Tzolis is wide. That's Arsenal's best team. Ødegaard gives a lot but he also costs you a lot in the #10. It's time to put an end to it, Mikel.

Arsenal are the best team in the league, but they remain too reliant on total control. No stardust when speeding up the play from front to back. No stardust in transitions. Part of it is player quality. Part of it is Ødegaard being a #8 in the #10. Imperfect team, but this was also the case last season when they won the title. They didn’t try to sign Rogers, Vinicius, Barcola, and Alvarez for no reason, you know. Instead of stumbling over the line like they did last season, the goal was to win the race by a mile this season by signing a game-changing forward, but unfortunately that hasn’t been possible in the market (Berta can take the blame for that, particularly with his mishandling of the Rogers deal). Need a proper #10 and a game-changing left winger. Eze can be both of those things. Time to get him back in the XI. Capable of a lot more than Ødegaard as a #10. Also has a higher ceiling than Tzolis on the left. We saw that when he came on. But, despite that, Arsenal are still a better team than last season. Why? Konsa is reliable depth for Saliba. Bruno G is a monster. Tzolis is a level ahead of both Trossard and Martinelli. But is it optimal? Can the team be EVEN better? Yeah, they can. The above attacking names would have assured that reality, but now it’s on Arteta to find internal solutions (they exist).
