Fall semester 2024 I am teaching a course I have not taught before. It's a seminar for First Year students at NYU. The title: "The figure of the journalist in Hollywood film." Feel free to send me your favorite journalism movies. Especially any you think I may not know about.
@jayrosen_nyu Has anyone mentioned The Year of Living Dangerously, my favorite film? Linda Hunt won an Oscar and it was before Mel Gibson became weird.
@jayrosen_nyu Please talk about the fact that in movies fictional female journalists always sleep with their sources because Hollywood men cannot conceive of women advancing in the industry any other way.
@jayrosen_nyu I can’t decide if it’s an obvious one or not, but Almost Famous has even more to say now in the age of celebrity profiles and questions of access
@jayrosen_nyu Absence of Malice has some bright spots and does a good job of explaining how libel works. Bonus points for Wiford Brimley. Related: Where does media literacy fit into the NYU curriculum?
