Don’t get me wrong … tongues are biblical … Where in Scripture does it teach a separate “private heavenly prayer language” that needs no interpretation? In 1 Corinthians 14, Paul’s solution to uninterpreted tongues is not, “Keep speaking because this is your private prayer language.” He says, “Let him keep silence in the church, and let him speak to himself, and to God” (1 Cor. 14:28). And when Paul speaks of praying in a tongue, he immediately insists that the mind should also be fruitful (vv. 14–15). The biblical pattern is clear: tongues were intelligible languages in Acts 2, and in the assembled church they required interpretation so others could understand and be edified (1 Cor. 14:5, 13, 27–28). Scripture never explicitly establishes a second category called a “private heavenly language” that bypasses understanding and interpretation. That doctrine has to be assumed rather than stated.
