Seriously, there is no downside to full YYYY-MM-DD adoption. Perfectly human readable, removes all American/European ambiguity, and is natively machine-sortable.

On the eve of AOL Instant Messenger's shutdown, I think its worthy to note the scale of it's failure. AIM was easily the largest walled-garden messaging network for several years, and it was a good product! Had every opportunity to be WhatsApp, Messenger, Twitter, Slack, etc.
