Kareem Abdul Jabbar, one of my sporting heroes, is 77 today. There are many signature moves in sport, but my favourite will always be his graceful, sweeping unstoppable sky hook. And in the almost four decades he's left the game, there's not been one player who can execute it consistently. Like so many other such innovations, it came out of need. The NCAA was so worried about Kareem, Lewis Alcindor then, dominating college basketball that they outlawed the dunk. In fact the “no dunk rule” was often referred to as the “Lew Alcindor Rule.” Like all great athletes, Kareem adapted, and came up with the sky hook. The NCAA's efforts were anyway in vain. UCLA had a 88-2 record and won the college championships in each of Kareem's 3 years, and they finally brought back the dunk, one of the most exciting elements in the game, in 1976!
