Nu svär jag i kyrkan: Vicepresident Vance levererade en lång rad budskap om Europa som de politiska ledarna framför honom på säkerhetskonferensen i München tyvärr inte lär ta till sig. Han lyfte bland annat att vissa grundläggande värden, som att respektera meningsmotståndare i den egna befolkningen, inte respekteras tillräckligt av de styrande i Europa. Och att detta är ett problem, dels för demokratierna här, dels för amerikanernas vilja att finansiera försvaret av Europa. Samtidigt underströk Vance att USA och Europa behöver samarbeta. Vi tillhör samma civilisation. Han är inte vår fiende. Tvärtom. Men han resonerar annorlunda än många tongivande personer på vår kontinent. Hoppas att många lägger sig vinn om att förstå hans grundläggande värderingar – annars lär polariseringen bara öka ännu mer. Det var nyttigt för oss att höra hans utomstående perspektiv - och jag håller med honom om att många lagar och regler som förbjuder olika åsiktsyttringar har gått för långt. Inklusive hans specifika kritik av den fällande domen mot islamkritiker i Sverige. Jag instämmer också i att det finns allmänt vänstertänkande i allehanda frågor i Europa, långt ifrån teknikoptimism, tro på förnuft och frihet, en bred och öppen debatt och beundran för framgångsrika entreprenörer. 🚨💣The below post calling United a "budget team" got a lot of reactions, doesn't United have one of the most expensive squads ever assembled? This is seriously what many fans believes after listening to media -- and sure the club has paid fairly high transfer fees regularly trying to get back to the top -- but its not even remotely one of the most expensive squads in the Premier League. 🔺Lets break it down. Player wages are not official, nor reported when a player is signed. But newsoutlets often have some type of figure that they report, often a pure guess or some leak by an agent or even the team. These numbers in media reports are not reliable at all. 🔺But clubs report wages paid to all employees in the club's Annual Reports and the clubs report the wage paid to players to UEFA, as a part of the FFP compliance procedure. These numbers are correct. 🔺Manchester United had a fairly high wage bill in 21/22, with Ronaldo, DDG, Varane, Pogba, Cavani and co on the squad. Since then, the wage bill has been drastically reduced. The actual player wages figures we have are from the 22/23 season, remember these figures include half a year of Ronaldo, DDG and so forth. Here they are: As can be seen, United's player wage bill is down from 337m (the grey figure) in 21/22 to 249m in 22/23. 20m or so of that is from not making the Champions League, the rest is getting rid of a ton of high paid expensive players (Pogba, Cavani and about 10 others), only half a year of Ronaldo and so forth. Liverpool's wage bill was de facto 54m higher than United's, Chelsea's wage bill was de facto 74m higher than United's and City's wage bill was de facto 140m higher than United's -- in 22/23. This is a lot of money, remember Rashford is allegedly on 15m per season, so City's squad is more expensive to United's with a factor of almost 10x Rashfords. Undisputable facts. So United's wage bill was very far behind the top 3 in 22/23 -- but that is ancient history, what has happened since? We shouldn't have to look at the numbers -- it should be common sense what happens to a wage bill if a team drops 11 players like David De Gea, Raphael Varane, Antony Martial, Donny van de Beek, Phil Jones, Eric Bailly, Fred, Henderson, Telles, AWB and B Williams and replace them with 8 mostly younger or mid-tier players like Hojlund, Mount, Onana, Yoro, Ugarte, De Ligt, Zirkzee and Mazraoui. But we have the numbers, so lets look at them. So again, in the Annual Reports we have the wages paid to all employees and in the UEFA landscape report we have the 22/23 wages paid to the players of all top teams. By looking at the total remuneration of these clubs in 22/23 and compare it with the wages paid to the players 22/23 -- we can establish how big the wages are to all "non-players" of the clubs. This number shouldn't change that drastically from year to year in most cases, and can then be used when we look at the latest annual reports. Below, the red bar showing "non-player wages". Hardly surprising, United pay its non-players the most of all clubs. Not only because the club is the biggest (with well over 1,000 employees), its a listed company and must have a lot of experts that can handle that (note that the player wages from the landscape report is converted to GBP). So how much wages are the clubs paying today? For Manchester United, its easy, the club as a listed company reports on a quarterly basis. United's wage bill is of course down by a lot, £50m from last year -- to £310m for 24/25 and total wages to non-players will not have decreased with all Ineos' new hirings, and the cost savings haven't kicked in yet. So if we assume that the total wages paid to non-players is £130m -- the player wage bill will be £180m. Arsenal has not reported any figures, but the Arsenal Supporters' Trust has a good estimate for 23/24 which brings total remuneration up to £305m. That would bring the player wages to £226m -- if we assume that the cost for the non-player staff is largely unchanged for Arsenal between 22/23 and 23/24. What has happened between 23/24 and 24/25 for Arsenal? If we look at Capology in lack of better alternatives, their wage have increased 1m (Ramsdale, ESR, and a few others leaving, Sterling, Caliafori, Merino and co joining), I think that is low, but lets use it. That gives Arsenal a low player wage bill, of 227m. Manchester City? City has reported for 23/24 -- and total remuneration fell from 423m to 413m (due to not paying out treble bonuses, only PL winning bonuses). Think it is fairly safe to assume that City's wage bill, with an non-player staff wage bill of app. 100m, for 24/25 is fairly unchanged at 313m. Chelsea? Chelsea's capology site looks like something out of North Korea, with all listed wages at best referring to what a player would get paid in a season in which he paid no games and Chelsea didn't play in Europe and finished last in the PL. Chelsea's total wage bill was up from 340m in 21/22 to 404m in 22/23, with a non-player wage bill of 72m. There is no way it will be cut with more than 50m for 24/25 -- so lets estimate a total player wage bill of £272m. Liverpool? Liverpool and Tottenham are harder to get solid numbers on, but going by incomings and outgoings and fair estimates -- I am assuming that Liverpool's wage bill has been reduced with £20m from 22/23 to 24/25 -- to £232m (this is surely too low, but to be on the safe side). Tottenham? Lets estimate that its up to £175m. That gives the following PL wage-bill ranking for 24/25: This gives Manchester United the 5th highest wage-bill in the PL -- that hardly makes them a "budget squad"? No, or I mean for a club supposed to compete for a top 4 spot, they are certainly way behind the top rivals -- but still ahead of Tottenham, and also Villa and Newcastle. But -- a big portion of the above wages isn't paid to the players that contribute to Manchester United on the pitch. Casemiro's legs are gone and Rashford is history -- that is £30m. Eriksen is on a high wage, 7.5m a year maybe. Maguire and Lindelof are another £16m. United still pay a large chunk of Sancho's wages. Antony, 10m? If we look at the pool of players Ruben Amorim considers for selection -- it is a budget squad for a team supposed to compete for a top 4. It can't even be up for debate. And yes, it is complete nonsense to look at United's gameday squad and talk about it being one of the most expensive squads ever etc lol. It is not even remotely in touch with reality. PSG's and Barca's player wage bills both topped 500m for 22/23. Real's won't be far behind in 24/25. United's squad is at 185m -- with all deadwood included. Lastly, OK, so we learned that we can't trust Capology's wages at all basically, but what does this mean for individual players? Most talk about how well paid individual players are at Manchester United -- is pretty misleading. We know as an indisputable fact that United paid 207m GBP to its players in 22/23, right? We know that United has cut its wage bill since. Probably sits around £180m this season. According to Capology, if we sum all reported wages for United's players, they total £185m. So in relation to United, the capology numbers are probably fairly correct. But we know as an indisputable fact that City paid its players £323m in 22/23, while Capology lists City's total wage bill to be 199m for 22/23. I.e. 62% too low. We also know that City's wage bill was largely unchanged in 23/24, and must assume that not much has happened for 24/25 either. This means that all wages at capology for City's players on avg. are app. 60% too low. And this speaks for itself, Rodri is of course not paid £220k a week, Akanji isn't paid 180k a week, Foden isn't paid 220k a week. In reality its probably closer to 1.6 to 2x those amounts. So while its said that like Maguire is one of the highest paid CBs in the PL, it is simply not correct. Maguire might earn 185k a week, but Ake will earn a lot more than that and someone like Akanji will be closer to 300k a week. These are the correction factors that must be used at Capology and similar sites, based on undisputable figures from 22/23:
