"Students were pressuring the university from the get-go, saying this isn't going to be a feasible transition to campus given the extenuating circumstances." - Student body president Reeves Moseley discusses UNC-Chapel Hill halting in-person classes following a Covid-19 outbreak

@rb_ARTH387 I completely agree that the painting elicits feelings of song and dance. That you can really feel what this painting is trying to elicit. However I disagree in that I believe the simplicity and roughness of the bust tells more of a story about the history of blacks

Altough each piece of artwork was made only a decade apart, the styles between the two are contrasting. Why is the painting depicted as a highly emotional abstract piece while the bust is realistic and without emotion? #ARTH387

I think that this is what they were trying to depict in ‘Head of a Boy.’ They wanted to depict this art as a bust to challenge the audience to think WHY would they want to immortalize the child in this context- expressionless, grey, eyes seemingly empty, and rough?

‘Ancestors’ exhibit - R&A London. Although busts have been an accepted form of displaying powerful and influential figures throughout history, this dares us to step outside of our common thought and tradition to digest why the sculpted had their busts depicted in this way

@rachaelrankin5 The painting uses color and abstraction to emphaisize feeling and emotion whereas the bust is not abstract and is quite bland in color. Therefore the bust uses this simplicity to highlight the rough texture possibly representing the difficult history of this boy #ARTH387

This article was fascinating its method of encouraging the coexistence of different genres of AA art whether it be from Harlem or the Caribbean. The mission, I believe, of Douglas's and Lam's work was to accept the beauty of AA art like their acceptance of natural beauty #arth387

@philecia2021 I see what you mean when you say that the first print looks like the man is calling for a storm, however to me this storm looks like rays from the sun. Like he’s summoning the sun to get rid of the storm. It signifies that the man is very powerful #ARTH387

when looking at each print, I wonder what the animals represent? What is the man in these prints protecting himself from or fighting against? Although the monsters are depicted visciously, he seems accepting in the first print and courageous in the second. #ARTH387

This was an interesting quote to be to be included within Powell’s ’Rebirth of a Nation,’ but I love how this bit uses primitiveness and the natural world as an expression the natural way one feels. Accepting ones true self. #ARTH387

@rachaelrankin5 I love how they said “bound to the conventions of a bourgeois matron.” Although this statement is referring to earlier years, I still feel as thought it is applicable today in that people especially artists feel bound to the expectations of the elite

@sirrahwu I really like this comment because often times when attaching race to an artist or their work, they feel the need for that work to be exceptional or extraordinary whereas here they turned away from and this and chose to represent the beauty in the ordinary.

@AnnieB55031681 I do very much so agree that this can be seen as a fear for embracing blackness. However I believe it is also a cry to remove the idea of race from art and the need to define the race of an artist. Instead, embrace art for what it is and what it represents rather than who made it
