@drianpace @tomgwalker @amwilson_opera That applies to other eras as well. Lived experience (study & performance) just convinces you that certain composers are head and shoulders above their peers. It has little to do with their fame. Palestrina vs Morales, Festa, Carpentras; Sibelius vs his Finnish contemporaries.

@JamesLucasIT It’s actually quite amazing that both Bramante and especially Michelangelo were visual artists and the latter was very reluctant to accept the commission of building St. Peter’s.

@hispanicnomad Finnish has two words that translate to happiness: iloisuus (being merry, joyous) and onnellisuus (being content, deeply happy). So in a way the contentment many people mention is what a Finn would probably think of as happiness. It has little to do with external expressions.

@poetcinematic For me, this scene was one of the most evocative and touching depictions of the significance of shared art. The moment when the audience reached their hands toward Hamlet was magical and true.

@flodyssey Me too. It encapsulates why art is essential. Not because it is ingenious but because it helps us understand the most difficult things in life and share those moments of seeing togehter.

@StephenSwartz1 @playinglesshurt The development of all the C clefs (alto, tenor, soprano, mezzosoprano) would look similar, I guess, as would the baritone in comparison to bass.

@balsheh_al35352 @culturaltutor Great questions and I believe much of it is documented. There were spurts of active buildong and then long lulls for a century or so. I seem to remember that when they were building the dome, there 900 men at work and ramps that horses could be driven up.

@Klassical_Kat In Bach and Brahms, who are probably closest to my heart, you hear the craft and al the hours of toil. In Mozart, none. It is so often eerily perfect. And no one has ever been able to turn the mood so deftly, often with one single note.

@colingorrie Finnish has ’koira’ from a word referring to a male dog (koiras is still generically any male animal). Koira seems to have superceded ’peni’ in a similar manner to the way dog took over.
