How has this course affected your way of viewing your own online activity? If you are in education, how has this course shaped the way you plan on teaching your students? I know I want to take the time to review all my privacy settings and teach my student to do the same!

I found that most lessons looped back to Bloom's taxonomy and the nine elements of digital citizenship. I'm glad to have covered those subjects first as a "base" before touching on the broader subjects of the course.

Overall what was the most important/surprising/interesting thing this course has taught you? I really enjoyed the nine elements of digital citizenship!

@aBarbosaEDUC307 I'm not against teaching digital literacy early on, but I have noticed a decline in spelling and student's abilities to write by hand. I think that auto-correct is killing our collective ability to write!

It is also important to consider that not all students have tech-savvy parents to guide them. We teach every student to read, we don't assume their parents have already taught them. The same goes for digital etiquette and the rules of the internet.

@RealBenFlax Perhaps, but there will always be a difference in knowledge among parents. Just like not all parents have sex talks with their children or teach them various things, not all parents will take the time to teach their children about technology and the dangers associated with it.

@tvijh_educ307 Especially at the elementary school level. I think students need to learn basic skills such as writing and adding by hand before learning to type. They do not write long texts at home at that age so the ipads are not needed in their daily lives.

Although I am fairly aware of the extent of online hate, it still amazes me that students as young as elementary school could be exposed to this hate. I believe it is our responsibility to educate our students about online hate.

I feel a new (renewed) responsibility to my students to guide them while they learn to navigate online and develop their use of technology. From digital citizenship to online hate, teachers must be responsible for giving their students the right tools to make good choices online.

I've enjoyed reflecting on the pedagogical aspects and implications of social media. I have questioned myself and my values/beliefs as a future teacher. #lesson13

Students don't need to read hate speech to understand it. It is important that we educate our students on hate speech & how to think for themselves before giving them access to it online. They need to be able to understand what they are seeing & know how to process it first.

It is important to educate students about hate speech online before even giving them access to technology in my opinion.

@tvijh_educ307 I agree. Sometimes I feel that technology at such a young age may not be a positive thing. I think that technology does have a place in the classroom but perhaps we are giving it too much room.

@spiro_rosss What also amazes me is how clueless parents and teachers can be sometimes. It is seemingly quite difficult to monitor online hate and filter what our students can access.

@MCowan95 My mother used to have "black out times" for my brother and I. We couldnt watch TV or use the computer from 4:00-5:00 (homework time) and after 8:00 during the week. On weekends it was from 11:00-2:00. It really helped us develop other interests (going outside, reading, etc).

@DDufour_EDUC307 I also feel like the Twitter participation is a good incentive to get me to follow the course and read the material!

@jessica_cuscuna I think it's hard to detach our personal feelings or memories towards a movie/book/story and look at it objectively. Just because I don't feel attachment to this movie, doesnt mean I wouldnt look past the issues in some of my favorite movies too!
