What a team effort! It was great fun for me to get involved with the team that identified and phenotyped the new membrane contact site proteins, including some of the largest lipid transfer proteins ever predicted.

We've collaborated with the Mizushima lab to predict the structure of TMEM41B/VMP1, which are among the most important host factors that permit SARS-Cov2 replication pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/?term=coronavi… This family has paired re-entrant loops, strongly indicating solute channels.

We've a new paper on BioRxiv analysing Ice2, a fungal protein implicated in Inheritance of Cortical ER (hence named ICE) We found Ice2 is a variant of SERINCs, ubiquitous proteins that strongly restrict HIV infection. biorxiv.org/cgi/content/sh… Ice2 has no features of a tether.

~2Bn years ago bacteria first developed complexity, by adding a new, external membrane layer. This needed a way to transfer lipids, the membrane's building blocks. blogs.biomedcentral.com/bmcseriesblog/… explains to a non-technical audience our work finding a groovy way bacteria transfer lipids.

@jwadeharper1's lab (@harvardmed) show in @ScienceAdvances that damaged #mitochondria form large #membranecontactsites with #autophagosomes. They identify large complexes that mediate this cross-talk. Among many components, they focus on hexokinase-2, which acts as a scaffold

Interesting new work from Yussuf Hannun's group on the distribution of different ceramises & sphingomyelins bit.ly/2ZUXONx. Particularly striking is the finding of SM both at the cytoplasmic PM leaflet , and widely across the cytoplasm, supporting papers saying SM flips.
