if it’s your first time seeking professional help for your mental health, you are better off seeing a counselor or psychologist first instead of a psychiatrist.

the problem with seeing a psychiatrist (MD) first is that it is very likely that you will come out of that checkup with a prescription, and this is not so helpful to clients who have no clue what their issues are.
@leanbeefmami While therapists and counsellors are the priming and long-term solutions for mental health, it's important to note that certain disorders can't be managed without prescription. For people afflicted with disorders like bipolar, it's not helpful to further stigmatize medication.
@leanbeefmami They should place good counselors in unis. There was no PsychServ in UP pa when I was a student. I went to the guidance counselor and she told me na "Oh, UP students don't have depression. You just need a boyfriend". Lol.
@leanbeefmami I'm very surprised about this. In my country psychiatrists won't even accept to see you if you don't go with a note from your psychologist and they make sure you are going to therapy. The psychologist is the one that evaluate if you need meds and send you to the psychiatrist.
@leanbeefmami If it’s your first time, you should know that it’s incredibly difficult to find one (counselor, psychologist, or psychiatrist) that’s worth a damn.
@leanbeefmami @lmTheReasonWhy I was prescribed antidepressants for years until i worked through some of my problems with previous therapists, found a good one, then had a psychiatrist who listened to the problems i brought up with the therapist and said “maybe antidepressants don’t work bc you have bipolar”
