Today we thank Æthelstan, who was named King of the Anglo-Saxons on this day 1,100 years ago. In this manuscript illustration he can be seen presenting a book to St Cuthbert, likely given by Æthelstan to his shrine, when he visited on his journey to Scotland in 934.
