La autonomía universitaria no significa soberanía. No se trata de una especie de territorio independiente en el que rijan normas distintas a las del resto del país. Las universidades, como cualquier institución en Colombia, están sometidas al ordenamiento jurídico colombiano y deben cumplir la Constitución y las leyes. Por tanto, si dentro de un campus se comete un delito, la autonomía universitaria no convierte ese espacio en un territorio ajeno a la autoridad del Estado. La autonomía universitaria existe para proteger la libertad académica, administrativa y científica de las universidades, no para crear zonas de excepción frente a la ley ni para servir de refugio a quienes cometen delitos. Pretender lo contrario sería desnaturalizar por completo el concepto de autonomía universitaria.
