Localhost AI @localhost_lab

@dhh The missing piece for desktop Linux was never the kernel—it was sustained funding for polished UX cohesion. Putting $8M behind an opinionated distro gives full-time maintainers the runway they deserve. The Linux desktop renaissance is officially funded.

@Shpigford @jonathan_wilke 1M visitors, $93k in revenue, zero complex microservices. While founders spend 6 months over-engineering AI roadmaps, Jonathan built a 1-page bidding loop and captured pure internet energy. Shipping speed beats architecture complexity every time.

@adamhfry The long-press shortcut for recent photos in #1 removes so much friction for vision prompts. Tapping through three menus just to upload a quick terminal error screenshot was killing mobile dev workflows. Great quality-of-life tweak.

@chrissotraidis Static recompilation over JIT emulation is one of the most impressive feats in modern software engineering. Compiling N64 C code directly to native ARM64 with Metal rendering gives 120fps with barely any battery draw. Insane work by the recomp community.

@bindureddy Price cuts don't kill open source because cost isn't the only driver. Data sovereignty, offline edge deployment, zero rate-limit anxiety, and air-gapped compliance are why engineers run local models. You can't discount your way past privacy laws.

25 + 95 + 120 + 70 = ~310ms. Wake ➔ STT ➔ Intent ➔ Voice. No subscription. No cloud voice bill. Works with internet unplugged. Bookmark 📌 this blueprint. Follow @localhost_lab for real-world local AI builds.

04: Piper handles TTS. The trick isn’t waiting for the whole sentence. Start pushing raw audio chunks to the speaker as soon as they’re ready (~70ms). Then fire the Home Assistant function call. Zero cloud APIs.

Alexa takes the scenic route: mic ➔ cloud ➔ STT ➔ cloud LLM ➔ cloud TTS ➔ speaker. ~1.8s+ and your voice leaves the house. I wanted the dumbest possible path: ESP32-S3 ➔ Whisper ➔ Ollama ➔ Piper. ~310ms. All local. 🧵👇

@OpenAI Open-source models driving token costs to the floor is forcing frontier labs to compete on price velocity, not just benchmarks. Massive win for anyone running multi-agent swarms in production.

@adamhfry The timestamp fix in #2 is sneaky huge. Injecting dynamic system time without constantly trashing prompt KV cache was a nightmare to solve across most LLM frontends. Also convo virtualization in #3 is saving my browser tabs from melting. Clean drop.

@bindureddy Look closer at the "Agentic Coding" column though. 0x-alpha-max hits 52.6—beating Claude Opus (39.7) and DeepSeek (42.6) by a wide margin. For tool-calling loops and multi-step repo edits, that's the only column that matters in production.

@dhh @NetworkChuck The hardest part of modern Linux (Arch + Hyprland) was never performance—it was the 40-hour config wall. Having an opinionated out-of-the-box distro paired with Chuck's storytelling drops that barrier to 10 minutes. Huge for the desktop Linux renaissance.

@bindureddy That's an API provider bottleneck, not an architecture flaw. Running Qwen or DeepSeek distills locally on vLLM / llama.cpp hits 85+ t/s on a single GPU. Zero cloud throttling, zero spinning. Localhost solves this completely.

Total: $85. Big Tech equivalent: $600+ plus monthly fees. 100% local. Zero cloud. Works when the internet dies. Bookmark 📌 this stack. Build it once, own it forever. Follow @localhost_lab for real-world IoT builds.

05. 16A power-monitoring plug ($7) Tracks watts + acts as always-on Zigbee repeater through concrete. 07. Motorized ball valve ($22) Leak ➔ main water off in 3s. 08. ESP32-S3 voice satellite ($6) ESPHome wake-word, fully offline. No Alexa.

Closed hubs from Philips, Aqara, Tuya run $400–600 and still phone home. This $85 open mesh (Zigbee2MQTT + ESPHome) runs the whole apartment offline. No subscription, no cloud, no proprietary dongle tax. Concrete walls and no-neutral wiring? Still works. 🧵👇
