"On a Feb. 16, 1953 mission, Ted Williams’ plane took heavy hits. He was streaming smoke and fire from the engine, which in a Panther usually signalled an explosion that would blow the tail off. Williams bellied in at 150 mph or more, slid up the runway for 2000 feet, came to a stop, jumped out of the cockpit, off the wing, ran until he was out of danger, turned around and stood there watching the plane burn on the runway." John Glenn at K3, Korea. "Ted Williams flew as my wingman, on about half the missions he flew in Korea. During his crash, he was on fire and had to belly land the plane back in. He slid it in on the belly. It came up the runway about 1,500 feet before he was able to jump out and run off the wingtip. Much as I appreciate baseball, Ted to me, will always be a Marine fighter pilot." John Glenn. "I liked flying. It was the second-best thing that ever happened to me. If I hadn’t had baseball to come back to, I might have gone on as a Marine pilot." Ted Williams.

The sheer number of lies from President Trump about Canada – growing again today – is remarkable. Just some fact checks from the last 18 months: - Trump falsely said today that Canada's unemployment rate is "10% and rapidly rising,” though it is 6.4% (under the Canadian method that adds about a percentage point) and has been declining for three months - Trump falsely said today that Canada does 95% of its business with the US, though 72% of Canadian exports went to the US last year - Trump falsely said today that high Canadian agricultural tariffs have caused the entire US trade deficit with Canada, though that deficit is overwhelmingly caused by US imports of cheap Canadian crude and though something like 97% of US ag exports to Canada are tariff-free - Trump has falsely said Canada generally doesn’t “take” US agricultural exports, though Canada is the world’s second-biggest buyer of those exports - Trump has falsely said the Canadian public likes the idea of becoming the 51st state, which the Canadian public overwhelmingly opposes - Trump has falsely said Canada is one of the world’s highest-tariff countries, though it is actually low in WTO global rankings - Trump has falsely said Canada essentially doesn't have a military, though its military has fought with the US in multiple wars and its force size ranks in the upper half of NATO - Trump has falsely said Canada hiked its dairy tariffs during the Biden administration, though they hadn’t changed since Trump’s first presidency - Trump has falsely said the US trade deficit with Canada is “$200 billion,” though it is nowhere close - Trump has falsely said Canada prohibits US banks, though it doesn't and though more than a dozen US banks were operating in Canada at the time he spoke - Trump has falsely said Canada is “constantly surrounded” by Chinese and Russian ships, though that is fiction - Trump has falsely said then-outgoing PM Trudeau was using their trade battle to run again for prime minister, though Trudeau obviously wasn’t running

This is one of the most famous paintings in America, and most people have no idea what they are actually looking at... The painting is Christina's World, made by Andrew Wyeth in 1948, and the woman was real: her name was Anna Christina Olson, Wyeth's neighbour in Cushing, Maine. Since childhood a degenerative condition had slowly taken the strength from her legs, until walking was no longer possible. She refused a wheelchair, and for her entire adult life she chose to drag herself across the ground with her arms instead, going wherever she wanted to go under her own power. Wyeth saw her one afternoon from an upstairs window, alone in that vast field, crawling slowly toward the house on the hill. He said the painting was an attempt to do justice to her extraordinary conquest of a life which most people would consider hopeless. Her world, he said, was limited physically but by no means spiritually. That is what turns this painting from a portrait of frailty into one of the most triumphant images ever made... Look at it long enough and it stops being about what her body took from her, and becomes about what she would not stop doing anyway. The field is enormous and she is small and the house is far away, and still she goes, because the alternative, to be carried, to give up, to let the distance win, was something she simply would not accept. There is one more thing: Christina loved this painting. Pink was her favorite color, and Wyeth had placed her exactly where she most wanted to be, out in the open, in her own field, under her own sky. Late in her life, when she could no longer even crawl out to that field, she said something that holds the whole meaning of art inside it: "Andy put me where he knew I wanted to be. Now that I can’t be there anymore, all I do is think of that picture, and I’m there."

On this night 251 years ago, two men climbed Old North Church's steeple. They held high two lanterns as a signal from Paul Revere that the British were heading to Concord via the Charles River. Their famous “one if by land, two if by sea” warning ignited the American Revolution.

Melvin Laird, Richard Nixon's Secretary of Defense, said this in 1972 when he dedicated "Correspondents' Corridor" in the Pentagon: "I do hope that [the press] remain as surly, suspicious, aggressive and thirsty as always. A free and strong American press is not a luxury; it is a necessity for the survival of our democracy. This corridor is not just a workspace; it is a recognition that the people’s right to know is as vital to our national security as any weapon system in our inventory."

BREAKING: In a stunning announcement, both Senators Republican Lisa Murkowski and Thom Tillis are saying they will vote against a motion to proceed on Donald Trump's Save Act. This is amazing.

@SenMarkKelly

This is an outrageous abuse of power by Donald Trump and his lackies. It wasn’t enough for Pete Hegseth to censure me and threaten to demote me, now it appears they tried to have me charged with a crime — all because of something I said that they didn’t like. That’s not the way things work in America. Donald Trump wants every American to be too scared to speak out against him. The most patriotic thing any of us can do is not back down.

Hi Speaker @MikeJohnson! If you tell me which 3, I'm happy to explain how ballot reporting works in that state and how it can sometimes lead to a red mirage. In Arizona, we have the opposite (blue mirage). For example, in the November 2020 election, Democrats were winning big in all the state and countywide elections. That's because in Arizona, we pre-process and pre-tabulate all mail ballots that are returned before Election Day. Those ballots came disproportionately from Democrats. That meant that the first results released at 8:00 PM were wayyyyy bluer than the final results. When Election Day in-person votes, and Election Day dropoff votes, are aggregated into the county later in the evening and over the next 48 hours, the races got redder and redder. I was a Republican candidate in Maricopa County in November 2020. I was down 90,000 votes to the Democratic candidate with the first results. I eventually came back and won. My Democratic opponent understood how it worked, did not cry foul, and conceded the race. Again, here to help! Let me know which 3.
