The exercise covered air, land and maritime operations, including anti-submarine warfare, mine countermeasures, expeditionary construction, search and rescue, medical response and multinational command and control. Its geography is critical. Iceland sits beside the Greenland-Iceland-United Kingdom gap, the maritime gateway connecting the Arctic and North Atlantic. During a European crisis, American troops, equipment and supplies would move across this oceanic bridge. Hostile submarines, mines or long-range attacks could attempt to disrupt that reinforcement. Northern Viking demonstrated that defending the corridor is not the responsibility of one ship or country. Aircraft locate threats, warships protect routes, construction forces restore damaged facilities and multinational commanders coordinate the entire system.
