«هنر محاوره» یعنی توانایی گفت‌وگوی زنده، خلاق و چندسویه؛ گفت‌وگویی که در آن هم شنیدن اهمیت دارد و هم گفتن، هم پرسش کردن و هم پاسخ یافتن. وقتی این هنر از بین می‌رود، ارتباط‌ها یا سطحی می‌شوند، یا به جدل و منازعه بدل می‌گردند، یا اصلاً خاموشی جای گفت‌وگو را می‌گیرد.

محاوره با خویشتن نیچه می‌گوید انسان باید توانایی «گفت‌وگوی بی‌رحمانه با خودش» را داشته باشد. جایی که نقاب‌ها کنار می‌رود و فرد می‌تواند با ریشه‌های ترس، ضعف و آرزوهایش روبه‌رو شود. کسی که این هنر را از دست داده، دروغ خودش را می‌بلعد و در سطح زندگی می‌کند.
فقدان هنر محاوره در جامعه یعنی سقوط به «رمه»؛ جایی که انسان‌ها توان شنیدن صدای متفاوت را ندارند و تنها در یک‌صدا، یک اخلاق و یک حقیقت ذوب می‌شوند. در فرد، یعنی ناتوانی از گفت‌وگو با خویشتن؛ همان چیزی که نیچه آن را شرط دگردیسی‌های سه‌گانه (شتر، شیر، کودک) می‌دانست.
