@DrHelenDrury I think there is a branch of maths teaching that isn't problem solving... the procedural stuff, where you learn specific methods or processes. But that part is essential for the problem solving that comes later... you can't have one without the other #mathscpdchat

@mathscpdchat @GT_Maths So I think- 4 minute mile is very decent middle distance running so that is 15mph. I know that 1500m is the 'metric mile'. And that is just under 4 times round the school running track. I know that 100m is the straight on the running track and WR is 10secs ish. #mathscpdchat

Got a whole day with each dept uncovering the maths that was within their subject curriculums they already had - and we looked to turbocharge those without distorting their subject needs. #mathscpdchat
Got my A level further maths students to sign in to a revision session today. Predictably, a number of fake names appeared on the list. Adorably, the fake names were all Star Trek characters or funny variations on the names of their other teachers (not a Hugh Jarse to be seen) 🤣
@DrHelenDrury Isn't that a bit like renaming PE "sport"? It's a half truth, there's more to the subject than just problem solving...

@mathscpdchat @GT_Maths So I think- 4 minute mile is very decent middle distance running so that is 15mph. I know that 1500m is the 'metric mile'. And that is just under 4 times round the school running track. I know that 100m is the straight on the running track and WR is 10secs ish. #mathscpdchat
@mathscpdchat Talk WITH students about problems, ideas, solutions. LISTEN to students talking together about: maths-challenges/problems/methods/what-they-know/procedures-they-were-shown/their-own-ideas/what-they-don't-know/what-worries-them/etc,etc ...

@Yorkshire_Steve @mathscpdchat My favourite lesson was to ask the year 7’s how long it would take to walk a mile… and where they would get 2 if they walked a mile… then make them do and live the maths… time them… get out the trundle wheels! #mathscpdchat
@GT_Maths @mathscpdchat @DeeVijayan I sometimes model a question that I deliberately haven't worked through beforehand (from a trusted source!) and talk through my thought process, being honest about the fact that I'm just trying things and describing what I think might happen. Works well at A Level #mathscpdchat
