@janieserna3 A29: I think it would be beneficial to allow students to bring in household objects that they think would be useful for measuring. This will teach them various ways they can measure and will offer students to be more creative in their thinking. #OSUElemMath

@EllieStammen @janieserna3 This makes learning more hands on for students. By giving students the opportunity to draw whatever shape they want, they are given the opportunity to be creative in their learning. This will help students learn properties of shapes better by connecting it to their drawing.

@rachelsuttonosu @SallyMc84272297 A 24 Growing up I never remember using pictures to learn about fractions. I remember not being able to use pictures once I got to a certain age. When I took math 1125 we expressed our thoughts through pictures. This is the first time I enjoyed working with fractions in math.

@SallyMc84272297 A25 I think that learning math works differently for all students. Some students may learn fractions best by using a certain method while that same method may be challenging for other students. Teaching is about learning the needs and strategies of your students. #OSUElemMath

@MadelineSprowls A positive mindset about math will stem from students understanding math rather than memorizing math. Understanding math results from collaborating with others, being creative with math, and not focused on getting one right answer but more focused on the process to that answer.

@MadelineSprowls This course has taught me the importance of student collaboration and sharing strategies. The most important concept I will take with me is to ensure that students understand concepts before they understand the rules. I want my students to know the 'why' before knowing any rules

@mathloverxoxo A23 Misinterpreting a math rule would stem from not knowing the meaning behind the rule. Growing up I never understood the rule of moving the decimal point and always got confused. I think this was due to a lack of understanding the 'why' behind the strategy. #OSUElemMath

@mathloverxoxo A22 I think a good strategy to this would include using manipulatives such as blocks or chips. If students use blocks or other objects then they will be able to understand these strategies better and would have a hands on experience in doing so. #OSUElemMath

@WolfordCassidy A19 Shortcuts like moving the decimal point over are not a bad thing. The problem is when students can't understand the reasoning to their strategy. The reasoning needs to be taught first, then strategy. Teachers need to make sure students know the reasoning behind their strategy

@WolfordCassidy A18 It is important to share you work with students but what is even more important is collaborating with students to get to the work you have created. I rarely shared my work with other students in math class and that's because we never collaborated to solve problems together.

@WolfordCassidy A17 I don't think that "chant teaching" is smart to use when beginning to teach children number knowledge. I think that one to one correspondence and visual representations are better to teach children number knowledge. Chanting does not teach children the how and why about #'s.

@Madison43189033 I always thought it was helpful when teachers would say: solve this problem using more than one strategy. I feel that this helps students extend their thinking and understand the complexity of math. When students solve in more than one way they realize that math can be creative.

@KatieKreczmer If children learn how to count with money this could help them understand that math is not just numbers but that there is actual meaning behind it. If we teach children how to count money then they will better understand how to add because it will have meaning to them.

@alymekinda I observed a kindergarten classroom and they were working on adding and subtracting, I never thought about incorporating multiplication and division. If kids are capable of doing this in kindergarten I think it would be beneficial to teach these skills with adding and subtraction

@KatieKonrad1 A12: The child seems to be struggling with visually representing what is happening. I would prompt her by drawing a picture or equation. I would draw an empty box then +6=15 so she could see that something plus 6 will give her the amount of cars that Kevin has. Then use blocks.

@EllieStammen A13:I think working in groups allows students to present explanations in an engaging way. I think in math it is important to discuss your strategies verbally to other people. In this way, students can learn from others and can also make sense about their own thinking #OSUElemMath
