Last week, I did a deep dive on Western Michigan's National Championship team from last year. I came in with an idea of what I would see, but was blown away by what I learned from watching the team play. I think many of it has value for coaches of all ages.

Attacking opportunities in practice come from unpredictable, non repetitive situations. Attacks begin outside dots, high emphasis on getting puck to middle ice areas under pressure. Constraints- only have x amount of seconds to get scoring chance, must make play off first touch.

Small games that force creativity inside airflow and require players to have presence at the paint. Imagine point values are varying based on where the scoring chance was created from. High danger inside pressure = high value Low danger no pressure = lesser value

They have immense puck patience. My thought is that the team practices at such a high pace with varying pressures and constraints that tight spaces in games become comfortable for them.

As I continue my synopsis of how the team practices through my analysis of their gameplay, I have drawn the conclusion that the team holds high emphasis on playing on inside ice. They are comfortable through pressure inside and they finish every play at the paint.

Lastly, they show no signs of struggle in high pressure situations. Which leads me to believe that the environment they practice in is filled with pressure. Practice high pressure = games become easier. Confident in pressured spaces = practice in pressured spaces.
