in the Deaf community, a name sign is the way someone is referred to when signing with the rest of the community. these signs are given by deaf parents at birth or assigned by the Deaf community later.
name signs exist for many reasons, one of which being to eliminate finger spelling names repeatedly. these names can be based on their spoken name or based on characteristics they have. they are very important in Deaf culture and are considered rites of passage.
