Simply Explained | Ep. 07: How Starlink Satellites Move Through Space Using Argon Ion Propulsion How does a Starlink satellite change its path once it's in orbit? Newer Starlink satellites use an electric engine called a Hall-effect thruster. Here's how it works. Solar panels make electricity, and a small onboard tank stores argon gas. Inside the thruster, electrons slam into argon atoms and knock electrons loose, turning the atoms into positively charged ions. An electric field then fires those ions out the back at very high speed. As they shoot out one way, the satellite is pushed the other way. It works like letting go of an inflated balloon: the air rushes out one way, and the balloon flies the other. Each push is tiny, but applied over time it changes the satellite's speed and orbit while using very little gas. That lets Starlink satellites climb to their working orbit, hold it, dodge debris, and lower themselves to burn up in the atmosphere at the end of their life. Why argon? It's plentiful and far cheaper than krypton or xenon, which matters when you're flying thousands of satellites. Between burns, the satellite simply coasts around Earth. The thruster steps in only when its path needs adjusting. What should we explain next?
