@NicoleAkersLCPS My principal would love this comment! Our school is moving towards one-to-one coaching for all teachers. I am very excited for input from other teachers - especially excited since it will be interdepartmental.

A4 Love this question. Always be willing to “talk it out” with someone. My department has been making so many good changes to our classrooms because people trust each other and are willing to take time to talk out ideas before trying them. #MasonMathEdChat

A3 Be the one willing to try new things! Align myself with people who also want to make changes. Ask students what works well for them and what doesn’t. Search for strategies that are working at other schools. #MasonMathEdChat

A1 I think the time/structure of the school day can be a huge barrier. Many students work long hours and aren’t ready to learn early in the morning. Students with attention issues may have a terrible time with block scheduling. #MasonMathEdChat

@aleaglen This definitely happens far too often. I often have to remind myself to not just plan “fun” activities for my AP students. Everyone deserves engaging activities!

@aleaglen We have at least a few students (many ELL, so already dealing with other barriers to learning) who work late into the night. Many have a hard time especially since they value the work they do outside of school very much.

One of my favorite things about my old department chair/new AP (shoutout: @APKP_LCHS) is that she was always willing to try a new teaching strategy before anyone else. Definitely a leader by example.
