Stellan Skarsgård giving perhaps the best answer to the ubiquitous "what do you think about superhero movies" question;
@Matthew_Lucas @avishaiw Remember - Iron Man was made when Marvel was an indie studio above a car dealership, produced on a tight budget, featuring a character nobody had heard of, released during the start of a recession, and funded with borrowed money.
@michael_olenick @Matthew_Lucas @avishaiw But it was also based on a well-known franchise with a built-in audience. They tapped a big-name star, and ALL movies, nearly, are created with borrowed money. That's the job of the producer - to get others to fund the movie.
@michael_olenick @ElamBend @Matthew_Lucas @avishaiw What are you talking about, Iron Man had a 140 million dollar budget, and the year after that Marvel was bought by disney for 4 billion dollars. Furthermore, marvel properties had already been super successful in cinema before that, like the Spiderman movies.
@michael_olenick @Matthew_Lucas @avishaiw I read this and thought, “That can’t be right, can it? They had Disney money then.” Nope. You’re totally right. Iron Man released in 2008. Disney didn’t acquire Marvel until Aug 2009. In retrospect, the timing of that deal made it a steal for Disney. Even at $4B+.
@michael_olenick @Matthew_Lucas @avishaiw Do independent movie studios regularly have 140 million to spend? It doesn’t sound right to be like major coporate entity marvel comics just became an independent film studio.
@michael_olenick @Matthew_Lucas @avishaiw The first Iron Man was produced and distributed with Paramount money. It was not exactly an “indie” production.
