My first adult novel, THE CARNIVAL OF ASH, will be released in Jan 2022 - ten years since the idea came to me. For much of that time, I despaired of ever seeing it in print; I'm so happy to be proved wrong, and so excited to be working with the fantastic @RebellionPub team.

Your .net code does not need 15 projects with a class per command and query. You don’t need an interface for everything either. It’s amazing to read extremely simple samples using .net vs node vs go. It seems our ecosystem is attracted to complexity... #dotnet

Waste, in the Lean sense, is everything that does not *directly* put value into your customers hands. Waste includes all meetings, using Jira, accounting activities, ceremonies, project and product management, etc. You cannot eliminate waste, but you can minimize it. 1/13

1/4 Always merge to trunk; pull from trunk every few hours. Wrap code that's "not finished" in a rollout toggle so that it can't run when deployed, and be sure to completely remove those toggles once it *does* run.

Wherever did the idea that incremental design means that you cannot think at all about the big picture up front come from? Of course you should think. Incremental design is about details, & willingness to make changes when reqd, & about creating a design able to handle change.

I regularly get asked whether TDD is a substitute for up front design. It's not, they complement each other ... (some) up front design, and the resulting set of architectural decisions, provides boundaries for TDD.

TDD can help with local design that facilitates refactoring. But TDD does not guide architectural decisions. Architecture requires forethought and deliberation. Forethought != BDUF. Architecture can be refactored into a clean, well-tested codebase.

I have a particular disdain for “software architects” who don’t actually program. Building software is very little like building houses. The constant (and fawning) comparisons do us a serious disservice. Software architecture is leading by example, not decrees.

Binary arguments drive me nuts. Most monoliths are big-ball-of-mud catastrophes that are albatrosses around the org's neck. Microservices built naively by ppl who don’t know what they’re doing have similar problems. Bad systems are legion. You can have good realizations of both.
