Back to Back PhD defences! Congratulations to Dr. Dinesh Raghu, my PhD #13, for making salient contributions to the field of end-to-end task oriented dialog, with a focus on unseen knowledge. And with his graduation, all of my 1st gen PhD students at IIT Delhi have graduated!
Congrats to Dr Yatin Nandwani (my PhD #12), for completing his defense with flying colors. Yatin made many amazing contributions to neuro-symbolic ML, especially for tasks requiring both perception and reasoning. Joint with Prof Parag Singla)
Another dinner, this time at #AAAI2024, where @ravi_iitm and I discussed challenges and opportunities with academic jobs in India. Lets hope many of these young folks apply to Indian academia in the next couple of years.
My takeaways from amazing panel. 1) is reasoning just iterated pattern matching? 2) don’t conflate form with content, 3) message may no longer be more important than messenger, 4) alignment must be for society, not CS folks, nd 5) jobs that need human experience still important.

Cool Rao-isms interspersed throughout this tutorial. Some I caught: "LLMs don't sometimes hallucinate. They _always_ hallucinate". "Creativity and truth-telling are at natural odds with each other.", "Civilization tries its best not to use System 2, ever!".. and more :)

A marathon 3 hour dinner at #NeurIPS2023. Many postdocs/PhD students interested in AI faculty positions in India got together to discuss job opportunities, issues, benefits, drawbacks of being a professor in India. Hope I convinced at least a few of them apply to IITs soon 😀
And my ex-students (across 15 years) got together for a quick lunch at #NeurIPS2023! Always great to see students doing so well :)
It is so heartening to see a good no. of ex- and current students/collaborators at @emnlpmeeting, almost all with a paper at the conference. Had a spirited discussion about best practices in the field. Also, 4 papers from my own group which will be presented today and tomorrow.
Can GPT4 perform so well in JEE entrance exam that it can join the prestigious IITs as a student? Well, we show, not yet! But, it is not too far. This paper is very worth reading. Will be presented at #EMNLP2023 in Singapore in December. Work done by @amuseddaman & @Cinnabar233

Heartiest congratulations to Parag Singla (cse.iitd.ac.in/~parags/) for taking on the headship of @YardiScAI at @iitdelhi. I hope that the school scales further heights under his able leadership.

Heartiest congratulations to Dr. Keshav Kolluru for moving the needle on neural Open IE significantly and comprehensively forward through his excellent PhD research. My PhD student #11.
Who knew that my old work on crowdsourcing optimization will find use in modern prompt engg research! In collab with @LTIatCMU, @PranjalAggarw16 and @aman_madaan show that an LLM call is like asking a noisy crowdworker, and similar principles of cost-quality optimization follow.

Asked #NLP students about most/least interesting topics in my course (cse.iitd.ac.in/~mausam/course…). ~All liked: Transformers, LSTM, PTLMs, even prompt engg. Disliked: FSA, PCFG, Linguistics. I have resisted so far, but is it time to stop teaching classical NLP? Why not? @aclmeeting
#ACL2023NLP has been very kind. I submitted 6 papers & got all 6 in (w/ 1 in Findings). This would be the best IITD show ever at @aclmeeting. With 22 co-authors, incl. collaborators from @ibm_in, @MicrosoftIndia, @TCSResearch, @iitbombay, @TowerVentures, @GoogleAI, @Knowdis2.
IITD collaboration with AIIMS doctors bearing fruit! Happy to report my first CVPR paper on helping diagnose Celiac disease via small intestine biopsies. It counts the number of two types of cells in 20x zoomed biopsies (a tedious job for pathologists). cse.iitd.ac.in/~mausam/papers…
Interested in a PhD in AI? Apply to Yardi School of AI at @iitdelhi. Every fulltime ScAI PhD student will now get a 10K extra honorarium per month (in addition to govt stipend), a 2L laptop and 5L pub/travel grants. Applications open till 31st March. home.iitd.ac.in/pg-admissions.…
It is a matter of joy and pride when your student comes back and gives a talk about their exciting new research work. @ankit_s_anand -- my 1st PhD from India and now at DeepMind -- visited IIT Delhi and talked about proving theorems using reinforcement learning. Real fun stuff!
