We recently released our annual survey with COLOPL, Inc. regarding Smartphone users in Japan. It covers information such as Online shopping, games currently played, mobile cashless services being used, where people tend to use their phone the most, Smart speakers etc.

Looked at separately, 39.7% of MNO users and 18.3% of MVNO users said they weren't fully aware of the details of their plan! #MNO #MVNO

Over 30% of people surveyed answered that they are not fully aware of what is included in their monthly plan. Plans becoming more complicated leads to an increase in the number of people who are not aware of what they pay for which then connects to dissatisfaction.

As for Flip phone users, more than half (63.9%) pay 1,000~3,000 Yen ($9~$26/£7~£20) each month. Perhaps not surprising but most people are not paying over $44/£34.

20.1% of Smartphone users pay between 7,000~9,000 Yen ($60~$80/£48~£62) followed by 1,000~3,000 Yen ($9~$26/£7~£20). Very few people pay more than $114/£89 a month. #MNO #MVNO #smartphone #Japan

After asking people who said they are interested in trying out some sort of Mobile Payment method, a reasonable amount of them showed interest in Touch&Pay. Unfortunately for them, the trend in Japan at the moment is QR Code Payments.. #QRPayment #cash #cashless #Japan

Regarding usage status, the amount of people that use Mobile Payments is still very low. Quite a lot of people said they have no interest whatsoever in Mobile payments. It will take some time before Japan lets go of cash. #cashless #Japan #cash #mobilepayments

Perhaps not surprisingly TV took the 1st spot amongst most used Wi-Fi connected Home Appliances. Vacuum cleaner, refrigerator, laundry were amongst those who did not make the Top 3. #smarthome #Japan

Amazon Echo was the most used Smart Speaker amongst those surveyed. If you are wondering why Apple's HomePod did not even make the Top 3, that's because it still isn't available for purchase in Japan! #AmazonEcho #GoogleHome #Clova

Another reason is that support in Japanese is still not as good as the English one, which drives people further away from purchasing one.

When it comes to Smart Speakers, there's a lot for people to choose from, however many Japanese people still do not own one. One reason for this is, many think it's embarrassing speaking to a speaker and as such are not inclined to purchase one.

This chart shows the most used MVNO service. Rakuten Mobile (ran by Rakuten) has been slowly increasing its user-base. Mineo runs a notice board and is also quite popular amongst Japanese people. As you can see the MVNO market is quite saturated. #MVNO #Japan #Rakuten #mineo

The next piece of data is about something Japanese people call Kakuyasu SIM. These are services run by MVNO companies and are quite a lot cheaper than those ran by MNO's. In Japan there quite a lot of MVNO's around, offering users a lot of options.

The chart bellow shows the increase in MVNO usage. In March 2018 it finally crossed over 10%. Usage is increasing, although slowly. Image of MVNO's is also slowly changing. #MVNO #Telecom #Japan
