As we get new students this year, always keep in mind that we never truly know what's happening at home.
The Le Mars baseball team recognizes seniors Carter Baumgartner, Sy Bixenman, Keegan Gengler, Sebastian MacGregor and Tate Murphy on Senior Night.
Schools exist to support families, not replace parents. That means parents need to actually parent, and the govt & communities need to stop treating schools as the fix for bad parenting. If youāre an educator who thinks otherwise, youāve watched too many teacher hero movies.
Dunno about other teachers on here but Iām a bit tired of being told the solutions to the problems in education by people who havenāt been near a classroom for decades. Opinions yes. Suggesting solutions? Sorry, you need some experience for that.
Reflecting on my 20+ years as a teacher, a recurring theme stands outā¦ American schools often take on too much. Schools shouldnāt be considered the lone solution for societyās ills. And many who believe this are teachers! And when you take on too much, failure is inevitable.
Public schools donāt just reflect the problems in our societyāthey absorb them. And then we act surprised when teachers canāt fix it all.

Not every kid deserves to stay in the classroom. Some students have earned their way out of it. It is not cruel to admit this. What's cruel is forcing 25 other students to sit in the room while one kid makes learning impossible. And every teacher knows what kid I mean! Someā¦
Every time we ask schools to solve another societal problem, we pull them further from their core mission: education. The result? Kids canāt read or do math. Schools canāt fix poverty, cure mental illness, or parent your kids. But the knowledge of how to teach math, reading,ā¦

This was real life. Happy healthy kids not requiring social media dopamine hits every 5 minutes. Sadly itās gone forever.
It's accepted that the worst-behaved children and the most selfish and incapable parents soak up a huge proportion of schools' time and resources. However, nobody ever really analyses how much worse this makes school for the average child.
