Ideology and partisanship are vastly overstated as factors in interstate migration decisions by people on here. (On both sides!) It's all cost of living, jobs, and sunshine—don't overthink it.

Without looking it up, who is the current governor of Kentucky?
Do you think there’s a tipping point in state politics (in either direction) beyond which a moderate young person would no longer decide based on cost of living, jobs, and sunshine? (Genuinely asking … Is there a point behind which young Stanford and MIT grads no longer want to go to Austin, for example, because the politics have gotten too extreme for them - or maybe the decision will always be about the favors you list)
@mnolangray These aren't college grads tho
@mnolangray I did a simple linear regression years ago looking to explain net migration between states. 3 variables explained about 80% of variation: a housing affordability metric, number of winter days (inverse), and average effective tax rate (prob proxy multiple things). 1 was largest.
@mnolangray I moved from Minneapolis, MN which was too far right for me to Salt Lake City. I moved for the outdoor recreation and cost but I also felt if my political needs weren't being met in a "blue state" then I had nothing to lose anyways
@mnolangray I think posing it as partisanship is reductionist. As a matter of policy, how many people from Kentucky now live in LA because of historic investments in the UC system, in spite of the insanely poor housing policy driving up cost of living? Why are the jobs here?
@mnolangray Housing access and affordability is a threshold requirement that is not being met in much of the country. If it were, I think state politics would emerge as a much bigger factor. It’s a little like job salary/security. If unmet, it’s the focus. If met, other factors take over
@mnolangray every gay man i know has either moved to Texas or is in the process of doing so
