The Judiciary has neither the power of the purse nor the power of the sword. Its legitimacy rests on a far stronger foundation i.e the trust and confidence of the people. To preserve that trust, it must remain uncompromising in its commitment to the Constitution, the rule of law, judicial independence, integrity, accountability and equal justice for all.
Congratulations to the newly appointed members of the Judiciary family. The appointment of Researchers is a welcome step toward strengthening the administration of justice. The necessity of these appointments is underscored by the significant caseloads in our courts. On average, a HC Judge handles approximately 1,200 cases annually, a Magistrate about 2,000 cases, while Judges in the ELC and ELRC handle approximately 500 and 450 cases respectively each year. Through diligent legal research, the researchers will play a critical role in enhancing judicial efficiency, improving the quality of judicial output, and supporting the timely delivery of decisions. It is equally encouraging to note that many of the appointees are young lawyers with fewer than five years' post-admission experience. This not only addresses challenges within the legal job market but also contributes to the development and mentorship of the next generation of judicial officers. I extend my best wishes to all the appointees for every success in their new roles.

President of the Court of Appeal, Justice Daniel Musinga, has officially opened the 2026 Kenya National Rounds of the Manfred Lachs Space Law Moot Court Competition at the Supreme Court. The event, organized by the Judiciary in partnership with the Kenya Space Agency (KSA), was attended by Justice Aggrey Muchelule, who is the Presiding Judge of the Moot, judges, academia and representatives of KSA led by Director General Brigadier Hillary Kipkosgey. In his keynote address, Justice Musinga underscored the growing importance of space law in the context of emerging global technologies and Kenya’s evolving role as a space-faring nation. He noted that as space activities expand, courts will increasingly be called upon to interpret and resolve complex legal questions relating to state responsibility and accountability beyond Earth. The competition has brought together nine universities from across the country, offering students a platform to engage with contemporary legal issues related to outer space. Kenya Space Agency (KSA), in partnership with the Judiciary, hosts the 2026 National Rounds of the Manfred Lachs Space Law Moot Court Competition at the Supreme Court of Kenya Buildings. The 2-day event will convene members of the Judiciary, law schools, legal scholars, and stakeholders from the space sector. This year’s National Rounds drew participants from ten universities, highlighting the growing interest in Space Policy and Law across the country. Beyond recognizing academic excellence, the moot court plays a critical role in preparing the next generation of legal professionals in this evolving field. In his opening remarks, the President of the Court of Appeal, Hon. Justice Daniel Musinga, underscored the growing significance of space law amid expanding global space activities. He stated that space is no longer the preserve of a few superpowers but has evolved into a dynamic and increasingly commercial domain requiring robust legal and regulatory frameworks. Brigadier Hillary Kipkosgey, Director General of KSA, emphasized that hosting the competition at the Supreme Court offers an authentic judicial environment, thereby enhancing the realism of the proceedings. He further noted that the partnership with the Judiciary demonstrates a shared commitment to advancing emerging areas of law, particularly space policy and regulation. This collaboration underscores the importance of supporting initiatives that foster the growth of space law and strengthen the rule of law in the peaceful exploration and use of outer space. The National Rounds serve as a gateway for top-performing teams to progress to the African Regional Rounds and ultimately compete at the World Finals, showcasing Kenya’s growing role in shaping the future of space law.
